I want to start everyone on EPO. Our weights range from 48-79 lbs.
I see that they come in different mg's.
Is it an issue if one won't eat the capsule? Is there a difference in absorption if I have to puncture the capsule and add to kibble?

I give Calla three 500 mg capsules because she was the itchy one with some allergy symptoms. She weighs 63 pounds or so. Luca gets just one, he weighs about 48 pounds. Calla likes liver treats so well that she now takes the pill I hand her and gets it down. Luca needs it pushed down his throat. Some people say that their doodles take the capsules with their kibble but then you get into questions of do they eat it all. Did it get stuck in fur etc. The same applies for eating it with opening capsules. Karen thinks this is a bad idea anyway, I'm not sure why. I don't think the weight determines need as much as the reason you are giving it. If the coat is dry, if they have allergies, etc. Start with one each. My doodles tolerate it with no problems. I give it daily.
I agree with F. Buy 500 mg softgels, start with one per dog per day. It needs to be given daily, the benefits are cumulative over time, not immediate. You can safely increase to 1500 mg per day, and weight has nothing to do with it. The worst thing that can happen is the stool will be a little loose.
Note: Evening primrose oil can lower the seizure threshold in dogs with seizure disorders. Do not use in any dog with a history of seizures.
I was told not to puncture them. It has to do with digestion, and also with loss of the fatty acids, I think. Most dogs will eat them if you hide in in the food bowl, especially if the food is wet. Other wise, try coating with peanut butter, cream cheese, etc. If all else fails, give as a pill, down the throat.
Camus will not take his EPO plain or in his kibble so I use a bit of goat cheese.
Same but we use peanut butter :)
Thanks!!!
Haley has been taking EPO for 3 to 4 years. I just put it in his kibble and he eats it (and I don't use toppers).
