here i go again with jace. i love my furry guy, he is smart, protective and fun. first it was battling an on going UTI which costs a small fortune. now i am dealing with a different issue and was wondering if anyone else is too.
Jace will play ball or anything until he is completely out of breath. if i give him his water at the park he is fine, however after playing hard at home he drinks his water and throws up the water about a minute or so later. no food or anything and it isn't really puking, it's almost as if an airbubble got trapped and burst tossing the water out. he just opens his mouth and it flys out. so gross!! I put a small ceramic bowl in his water bowl to force him to drink slower it has helped but when he is playing hard and drinking it doesn't matter. has anyone else experienced this or do i just have a defective dog? I have only had him since july and he has cost me a fortune already...help!!

Denise,
My Golden does that after a long romp in the park or just playing with the doodle. I have determined that she takes in water to fast and to much. So I make sure that there is only a small amount for her to drink when we come back in. After she has cooled down or just relaxed, I will fill the bowl full. This seems to work most of the time. I just think that when they are thirsty after play, their water cut-off switch gets stuck! Good luck. Sorry for the $$$$'s your fella has cost you but I know he will more than make it up in love.
Sometimes Charlie does this too. I'm usually around him after a play session, so after a few drinks, I'll call him away from his bowl. He listens.
Just give him small amounts at a time until he catches his breath and settles down a bit. Then you can fill his bowl again.
He is not defective...just still a baby. He will soon be a big boy and all this will be a distant memory. Have you gotten pet insurance for him yet? It is a good way to guard against big vet bills in the future. Would love to see a picture of Jace!
If I can get him to sit still long enough...I would love to post some pics. :)
whew! Thanks everyone for your help, I'm breathing a little easier now. It isn't everytime he drinks only when he is overheated and I have the elevated bowls. I have done some research on it and it points to Megaesophagus ...but I don't think that is it at all. I will keep an eye on him to see if it gets worse.
Add Declan to the list, and it's perfectly normal. He did it yesterday, in fact, because he was over-tired after agility class and had too many treats in his stomach - came home, ran around the back yard with his brother for a few minutes, then tanked up on water (and my fault entirely for not paying attention and making him go easy on the water and take a rest-break). Sudden blurp and all that water and all those treats on the carpet.
And I'll third the suggestion of pet insurance. It is sooooo worth it!
Add Finnegan too. Playing with another dog, he would drink too much and out it would come as soon as they began to chase each other again. Now I know to give him just a small amount of water and wait until he's cooled down to offer more. At recent romps, there has been water available and no problem. I'm hoping he's grown out of it, but I still monitor how much he's drinking. (It's also important not to feed Jace right before or right after exercise.) It was concerning at first, but FInn's not sick. What he hasn't grown out of is sticking his big paws in the bowl and paddling the water out all over the place. Thankfully, he only does this outside LOL For your own peace of mind though, get pet insurance right away. There are some good discussions here if you search plus it's easy to compare plans on internet. Would love to see pictures of Jace.
