Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi Gang,

I am new to DK and learning my way around this site. For those of you who  have reached out to me, sorry for the repeat of the info.

Currently my puppy and I are battling a drug resistant strain of  Giardia. He is 6.5 months old and he came to us with it, and we have been  treating him on and off for the past 4.5 months.

We have tried Metro and Panacur, we have tried Tinidazole and Tylan and  probiotics we have tried it all. We keep his rear very short and I wipe it  after every stool. I only walk him on a leash (and that is only on our property  because he is contagious) so that I can pick up his stool the sec it hits the  ground.

I have cleaned and disinfected my house until my hands have cracked like its  the middle of winter.

I am reaching out in hopes that one of you has gone through this type of  Giardia battle and has some advice or suggestions to offer.

I am also hoping to hear "happy endings" and that there is life after the  dreaded Giardia.

Thanks in advance...

There are several of us with Manor Lake puppies who have battled Giardia.  It took about 6.5 months of Panacur.(2 weeks on/1 week off, plus I had to treat my cat and other dog).

Have you let Kim at ML know?  I think she really needs to address this - especially for the investment costs for a ML puppy.  While I love Pink and she's a great dog, I doubt that I will purchase another puppy from them.  Kim needs to keep the puppies away from ponds and standing water.

I think it's interesting that only puppies that come from Manor Lakes are having the Giardia problem.   I was lucky that Millie managed to avoid it or maybe it was becasue I hounded Manaor Lakes prior to her being shipped to me that I wanted her tested several time's for Giardia as close to her flight day as possible.  I also mentioned that if the results were positive, I wanted her treated there before being shipped.    I was a real pain in the arse about it but Millie arrived problem free.

I too will never purchase a puppy from Manor Lakes since they don't do anything about preventing it from happening.  They do, however, will agree to help with the cost of treating it.....I think.  It's worth a try and you definitely need to let them know what you are all going through.  Perhaps Kim needs to slow down and pay attention to her puppies and not have a gazillion of them at one time so she can do so.   I've not heard of any other breeder that has the Giardia problem.  Manor Lakes is pretty consistent with having the problem.

Good luck and I hope the Giardia issue is cured soon.

Hi Cynthia!
Thank you for responding. Yes - they are aware at ML of what's happening with Henry. I have asked them if they had ever had a case that took so long to clear up... And they said "No."
So thank you for telling me it took you over 6 months to clear up. I was starting to get very worried. My vet was afraid that there was something really wrong with Henry that was preventing his immune system from fighting this strain Giardia.
So the good thing about this site is that I am seeing other peoples post about Giardia that's coming from the Pacific NW and I'm starting to realize that we aren't the only ones what have had a tough fight on their hands.

When you say you did just did Pancur 2 weeks on / 1 week off.... Did you mean that you did that for the entire 6.5 months?

God love your Pink if you did because that Pancur is nasty tasting and it's always an ordeal to get Henry to take it. He runs in the other room as soon as he sees me pick up the bottle. : )
How old is Pink, when did you get her?

Almost the whole time - maybe a month off.  My vet tested at 10 days and then 3 weeks and we had a couple false negatives.  After the last one, we stopped testing and went for 3 months with that regimen.

Pink is 17 months old and I got her end of July 2012.  @Joan, I've noticed that Kim is breeding a LOT of puppies and I saw that she was breeding Emmie again even though she just had puppies in May or June - so that's 3 litters in less than 18 mos.

Okay well maybe that's our lucky treatment solution??!!

I will call my vet today and see what she thinks.

Currently he is taking Metro and Panacur (AGAIN) so I'd have to finish that up first... but at this point I am open to anything. We were thinking about having him see a Parasitologist, which still may be what we do as well. Kim needs to hire someone like that to help her treat these dogs coming off their property.

Re: Emmie: Yikes, that seems a tad excessive doesn't it?

Someone on this site recently told me that ML has about 32 puppies a month.... multiply those numbers out, I think they can afford a parasitologist to be on staff.

Here's my sweet boy... he is from the Rufus/Serena litter born April 4th, 2013

I'd love to find some of his siblings....

He's adorable!

Henry is a very handsome boy, look so much like Mari.  But I bet you Henry is a lot nicer than Mari. HAHA

Henry looks like Mari? Whats wrong with Mari?  Henry is a total a softy... sweet as sugar.

I wish Mari was a softy, she's a Diva & Bully. HAHA  I'm going to send Mari to Boot Camp for 3 whole weeks. The cost is $2400, a lot of money, but anything to change Mari into a lady.

Anthony ~ how many obedience classes have you been to with little Mari?  Just curious!

I agree - I'm not sure why she's breeding so many and breeding the dams so often.

Where are you?  I'm in Seattle and Pink's vet is Dr. Lina Mohammed at Interbay Animal Hospital (206.282.1961) - maybe she would talk to your vet.
