Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hi Gang,
I am new to DK and learning my way around this site. For those of you who have reached out to me, sorry for the repeat of the info.
Currently my puppy and I are battling a drug resistant strain of Giardia. He is 6.5 months old and he came to us with it, and we have been treating him on and off for the past 4.5 months.
We have tried Metro and Panacur, we have tried Tinidazole and Tylan and probiotics we have tried it all. We keep his rear very short and I wipe it after every stool. I only walk him on a leash (and that is only on our property because he is contagious) so that I can pick up his stool the sec it hits the ground.
I have cleaned and disinfected my house until my hands have cracked like its the middle of winter.
I am reaching out in hopes that one of you has gone through this type of Giardia battle and has some advice or suggestions to offer.
I am also hoping to hear "happy endings" and that there is life after the dreaded Giardia.
Thanks in advance...

I am in Chicago....maybe that's a good idea! Thank you for her name and number!! XO
Where in Chicago? I grew up on the southside of Chicago (South Shore between 71st and 79th Sts. and Rainbow beach was our backyard). My son's live Lincoln Park (North Ave/Clark St.). I now live 130miles west of the city in the Quad Cities. Chicago will always be my home
"........Pink is 17 months old and I got her end of July 2012. @Joan, I've noticed that Kim is breeding a LOT of puppies and I saw that she was breeding Emmie again even though she just had puppies in May or June - so that's 3 litters in less than 18 mos."

My Mari is 11 1/2 months old and I won't ever buy another puppy from Manor Lake. I thought I did my research for all the breeders, but I guess I didn't do a good job. Lucky for me, during the 2nd round for giardia, my Vet friend gave me Trinzadole and it worked.
Lori ~ is the panacur you are giving your doodle liquid form? We used tablets only on panacur and metro. I just put them in a little peanut butter and Beau swallowed them like it was a great treat. It might help if the vet can use tablet form. Sorry you are having such a problem with this.
Pink had a powdered form that I just sprinkled on her food. I think even the cats ate it that way with no problem.
The Pancur I am giving him is liquid and it taste terrible.
I did ask my vet about the pill form and its more expensive, but if we do try what you guys did with 2 wks on 1 wk off, I think the pill form will be the way we go.
My vet spoke with a parasitologist today and they suggested after hearing everything we've done so far, That we should try Henry on Drontal for 5 days. That is usually used as a heavy duty deworming drug, but he said he's had good results when going after difficult strains of Giardia, so that we will now try first for 5 days, then wait 10 days and see what happens with his fecal test.
For the people who are on this thread and not my other one, this is my Henry 2 days ago (he's 6.5 months old) And since this is the ML thread... He is from the Serena/Rufus litter so some of you should know who his parents are. : )
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate everyone's comments, suggestions and help - You guys are the best!!
Henry is gorgeous!!!
Thank Joan!
Its so hard to tell in pictures, but he is a little guy. His parents were good sized 50 & 55lbs. Serena is 24" at the Should and Rufus 21".
Henry was the smallest male in the litter, when we got him at 9wks he was only 4lbs, 10oz. Today he is about 28lbs, and maybe 16-17" tall? My vet doesn't think he will get close to 40lbs as we were told. But then again I have read all sorts of different things on this site regarding how fast peoples ALDs have grown...so who knows?
For awhile there I was wondering if he was a mini?
My frist doodle, Cooper came from a breeder other than ML and he was supposed to be a Medium size. He is 11 months old and a few weeks ago he weighed only 24lbs. He's about 17-18" tall. I think he is a large Mini/very small Medium. I was hoping for a larger dog. My second doodle came from ML and after much research I finally thought I'd found the breeder who I could trust and just knew I'd get what I requested and paid for. Well, Millie is now 5 months old and 3 weeks ago only weighed 18lbs. She too is about 17-18 " tall. She's leggy and thin but has thicker bones than Cooper and a beautiful face. I doubt if she'll get to the LARGE Medium size I was promised either. I bet she doesn't exceed 30lbs. which would make her a small Medium. I requested the largest Medium from ML and they didn't comply. I'm not happy at all with the size of the doodles I ended up with however, they are sweet and good and here to stay. I've got alot of $$ wrapped up in doodles that didn't fit the criteria I'd specified. That's unacceptable and I'm not happy at all with either breeders I did business with.
If I were to ever get another doodle, I'd be looking at a Standard size and definitely another breeder who doesn't breed mini's or small Mediums.
