Unbelievable!  I have heard it before but never had to deal with it.  Polly just went out and pooped and before I could get across the yard to pick it up she started to eat it, ugh!  The yard is sizable and I am old enough that running just isn't going to work.  As I hurry toward her she knows she is going to lose it so she tries to grab and run.  HELP!  I need to stop this quickly...no more kisses for me today.

Yuk!  I've never had a dog that ate their own poop but my last doodle always went under the fence to our neighbours to eat their horse poop!  I kept saying that I spent a fortune on good dog food and she still preferred recycled horse feed!

Only thing I can think of to stop this is to keep her on a leash while she does her business and as soon as she goes to sniff it say "leave it" .  I don't know if that will work.  Hopefully someone on here has had the problem and also solved it!!!  Good luck!!!

our lab did this.  I was never able to break her of it- hope you have better luck.  it's so gross!

I'd put her on a long line when she's out in the yard, and supervise. Then you can get her back to you the minute she's done pooping before she has a chance to sample it. (Yuck yuck yuck)

A hard habit to beak from what I've read. The long line Karen suggested is a good idea. Several DK members have dealt with this, you can search discussions.
Very alarming when you first experiance poo eating. The poo eaters gooble it up it up so fast, especially when they think you are going to try and stop them. Start teaching leave it and drop it, with treats ( not poop right now) and it may come in handy later.
A Warning to keep an eye on her in public if she eats other poop besides hers. Some dogs only eat their own. This may be to protect their scent against predators. Other dogs will eat ' other poo' which can be a problem! Many parasite and diseases are passed this way.
Oddly, Riley will stop and kind of point when she comes across her own poop but won't eat it. I'm embarrassed to say however she has a fondness for deer poop. Ugh...she finds the pellets before we can see them. Ended up with parasites. Now I always take her out on a leash and keep her close. Unfortunately, she doesn't get leave it.

cat poop too ...I have always been so careful from  Violet eating it ... then the day came ... UGHHH

As a puppy Haley ate his on poo.  Uck!  Our solution to that was to always keep him on a leash and pick it up immediately.  He finally quit.

Here, this made me laugh. Took me forever to find it again.  Hope it lightens your day just a bit.

Thank you Dawn Ross

Very bad poetry and I think both roses and violets are edible : ) cute dog.

That does make me laugh, Polly doing it does not :-)  The funny thing here is that Meg won't get near a toy that lands anywhere near where she pooped, even though we pick it right up and goofy little Polly must think since we scoop it right up it must have some value.

I've read that the reason they eat their own poop is because of some kind of deficiency in their diet. Try feeding your dog green beans and pineapple. If after a few days if it happens again it may just be a quirk, but I'd try the former before you resolve to that notion.
