After several months of supplements, acupuncture, cold laser treatments and no change, we had an appointment with a orthopedic surgeon. Hip x-rays were done this morning and they confirmed what I thought. Connor has hip dysplasia. Not just in one hip, but both. We talked treatment options and one that seemed the best to me was stem cell therapy. At 6 years old, enough damage has been done that it can't be reversed, but the surgeon said it could maintain Connor at a stable level with no more deterioration. We have a plan for Connor to lose a little weight, a light exercise plan to help build the muscles in Connor's back legs, and continued supplements and cold laser therapy. When our goal is reached, then Connor will have the surgery to harvest the stem cells, have them scrubbed, etc and then injected into his hip joints. I know this has proved to be an effective treatment in horses and I've read about success in dogs, as well, but I haven't talked with anyone who has actually been through the process.

Any comments or experience anyone could share?

Thanks very much.

I have no experience with this procedure  but I have read about it with great interest. There are even some places doing this sort of therapy for humans but it is not yet approved for orthopedic issues for people.

I have no knowledge or experience with stem cell therapy, but I hope it is very successful for Connor, and helps him to live a pain-free life. Hugs to you both.

I do not have any experience with the procedure, but I met someone who has dog that had severe spinal problems and he said he was very happy with the results of stem cell therapy.  There is a center here in California where he had the procedure done. Hopefully, it will be as successful for Connor.

Although I have no experience with this procedure, I do have experience with double hip dysplasia.  Our Beemer was diagnosed at 13 months.  He was a candidate for surgery.  (you can read his blog here)  I just wanted you to know that I understand what you are going through and my prayers are with you through this journey,  Blessings.
