I have all hardwood floors in my apartment. They'll be great for housebreaking but I want to get rugs so it's warmer and also for some traction if I were to play fetch with my guy.

I cannot decide on a type or style and can't seem to find any with nice patterns I like. I'm going crazy looking & searching for rugs but can't find any I like enough to buy.

At this point, I'm thinking of getting a jute or sisal rug--but I'm unsure if my pup would rip it up, since its not a solid rug like a heavy pile wool.

Any help/advice is appreciated!

We have a combination of ceramic flooring and broadloom.  The broadloom I chose is holding up very well.  I chose a neutral tan colour with a high and low pattern.  It really seems to hide hair, dirt and any pulls.

Let us know what you finally get.  We just ripped out most of the old wall-to-wall carpeting in our house replacing it with hardwoods. We are starting the area rug search as well.

We had rugs when Riley was a puppy, he had some accidents on them and I ended up throwing them out. We haven't replaced them yet and if I were you I would consider waiting a while though I will be watching for advice as we are about ready to look for a new one.

I had a white shag rug in the living room. Invariably if any accident had to happen it was there. As the doodles matured it was the occasional vomit. It was very yucky to clean up. It is gone and I have an indoor-outdoor rug for now. I think the doodles don''t think it's an appropriate place for accidents but the also vomit very rarely.

I recently had hardwoods put down a d my guy is slipping all over the place....I just use a rug with a slip proof guard under it...not the same Jack won't run on it!

With dogs I have nice rugs but I put that old, junk store rubber-back rugs down that I can pull up when the mud leaves.  Then, I just throw them away or use them out in the garage.

You live in a warm climate though. Mud is an issue for me

I just remodeled and put in ceramic tile that looks exactly like wood. I wanted some doodle-friendly area rugs to warm up the room, and went to Lowes and bought a cream "shag" area rug. It wasn't very expensive, and it hides EVERYTHING. I couldn't be happier. And when it does start to look bad, I'll just go to Lowes and get another!

I have an area rug that I love, but it shows all of Camus' hair (super shedder).  The rug is Asian style red wool and I decided to try washing it outside.  It has washed beautifully with dish soap! I vacuum regularly because of the dog hair, but both Camus and I love it so it is not a big deal.  The rug is now beginning to show some wear after 2 dogs and many years, so I am looking for another wool area rug.

All of our rugs (persian?) have  chewed edges from our Springer Spaniel as a puppy.  He was a holy terror.  He also ate couches, wall molding, and carpeting.  Suggestion  - put the non-slip padding under whatever you choose.

I can only add that we have hardwoods with 3 rugs that are rubber backed in kitchen at the doors, and 3 Persian rugs in other areas of the house that have fringed edges.

Yogi has chewed on everyone. No damage... Yet, but I guess I would just suggest not investing a lot of money in the rugs
For now. Wait till he's older to spend much money on nicer rugs
I'm thinking of just going to a Target or similar store & getting an inexpensive low pile rug & runner. I guess I'm mostly worried about him slipping everywhere!

I'm also worried about some of my hardwood floors. My bedroom & hallway have original hardwoods that aren't fully sealed. I'm thinking when I'm playing with him, I'll have the bedroom door shut & hallway blocked with a gate. Or etch closely if I want to play fetch in the hallway. What can I use for those hardwoods to make sure no urine would seep under the wood? Of course I'd clean it up ASAP with Nature's Miracle. I've heard of vinegar to really get a lingering scent out of wood.

Nature's Miracle makes a cleaner specifically for hardwood floors-have not tried it myself though.

We have runners with rubber backing - inexpensive from Target or Home Depot- so they can be switched out without breaking the bank.  Upstairs is carpeted, and I wish we could pull it up, but the thought of the sanding and staining process (which we did downstairs) is too daunting!
