Check out the discussion two below yours. I think teaching the children from word one how to hand the puppy is very important. The puppy must also have a good amount of stress free down time away from the kids. Choose a pup that is confident but does not struggle when you lay her on her back in your arms.
Agree with the other comments. We have three and with each one we (1) knew the personality we needed to fit into our family and (2) just seemed to know when we found that puppy. I realize the last one isn't that helpful. However, with our first, I fell in love the first time I held him for #2, the same thing happened with my husband. With #3, I was certain that a chocolate girl was the best fit. In the end, we brought home a black boy and Beau is the sweetest doodle one could hope for. My personal experience says to decide the personality that fits your family and then go with your heart.
