Owen and Kona have both been in the vet hospital for IV fluids twice this month for what appeared to be flu-like symptoms. This past week they both had a fever as well and had to get IV fluids for 24 hours. They came home with antibiotics. Kona seems just fine now. Owen showed a low blood platelet count. I don't know how low. (Kona did not have this symptom.)

The vet asked if he has had ticks. Neither has ever had a tick on them.

They checked for pancreatitis in Owen but that wasn't it. I asked the vet why this would be and she said it was very strange for such a young dog to have low platelets (3 years old). He came home last night, and we are taking him back tonight for another blood draw. He has been lethargic all day but is keeping his food and water down.

When I looked online for information it seemed the tick born disease and cancer were the most likely culprits.

Anyone have any other ideas? Thank you.

Crazy, huh? Big sigh of relief here!
I hope Owen is completely back to normal soon.
Thank you, F. It's so strange to have him be so quiet! ;o)

I'm just reading all this now, what a worry you have had and too many hospital/vet visits. Let's hope and pray that he gets better and better and whatever this was drifts into the distant past. Sending lots of good thoughts to you all for a Healthy and Happy Holiday season..X

Thank you, Nicky. I'm very hopeful that he will improve daily.
Did they run the SNAP test to check for e-canis? It is a tick borne disease presenting with flu like symptoms. If he had it his platelets could be low. The Titer would be positive. The treatment is 30 days of doxycycline. Webber tested positive and I never saw a tick and he was not sick. The Vet said a dog with a strong immune system can work it out. He has stayed positive for two years on the test.
I will ask! I don't think so.

So glad to hear that Owen's platelet count is back in the normal range; hope he's back to his usual goofy self soon!

Thank you, Karen.

I'm just seeing this now Bonnie and I'm so glad to hear his platelet counts are rising. What a month you've had.  I hope Owen continues to improve and is back to his bouncy self soon.  Keeping good thoughts that all of you have a healthy happy Holiday season.  You so deserve it!

Thank you, Cheryl! I hope so too
