Tail injury advice needed

Hours ago I researched Tail Injury Discussions and posted our situation on that discussion page. I don't post often and couldn't figure out how to repost it here, (using 140 characters or less) but we need advice. We are dealing with an injury our Miah sustained when a groomer using a Dremmel to grind her nails accidentally cut the tip of her tail. That was a week ago and several stitches. The wound is not healing as hoped. Our vet now suggests that if it doesn't heal she will need to amputate. If there is anyway to avoid more surgery, we would prefer it. Ugh, just read a bit. Enough for me. But primal scream. They used to treat human babies without anesthesia too.

I'm with you F. Too much! IMHO anyone keen on removing puppy body parts w/o anesthesia should have it done to themselves first.  Tara has no dew claws and I don't even want to think about how that happened. :(

My two have them and they are a pain to trim. But I do think they use them to hold things.

My cat has them too and they really are a pain to trim. I can see where they might be useful for holding though.

I read the poodle and dog blog, and OMG, people have very strong opinions on the issue of docking. Maybe it's a good thing that there is no standard for Doodles. Personally, I would be against cutting off any part of a dog's body to give it a certain look. I did read where poodles have thinner bones in their tails making them more susceptible to injury, but even that is debatable. We got Miah because we wanted a low shedding pet that wouldn't worsen our allergies. But she quickly became so much more than a pet. The fact that she's gorgeous is a bonus, and now that it looks like her tail is on the mend, I'm grateful that she will be able use it the way nature intended.
