Hi, Safiy is one week shy of being 3 months old. I read somewhere (I think google search) that carrot sticks are good for dogs to chew on. Have any of you given your doodle a carrot stick? Thanks! And by the way, I don't know what I would have done if I didn't have this group! I have learn so much from your discussions.

I think raw carrots are the one veg that Hector is uninterested in. He LOVES courgette tops to the max.

I gave Murfee baby carrots when he was teething. He loved them and still loves them to this day (he's 11 months). I try to give them as rewards (such as bringing in the paper) instead of dog cookies.

Yarrow is three months old today and I have already been giving her pieces of carrot (and apple and banana).  In small bits I think it's a healthy treat, but breaks apart too easily to be any help with teething.  Those peeled 'baby' carrots are carved from larger carrots, tumbled smooth and (here's the part that concerns me) treated with chlorine water to preserve their freshness.  I only mention this because, for the past 14 years, I have given all my pets only the same filtered water that I drink. As I understand it, chlorine is not good for the immune system.  So, as a healthy treat I'm saying yes to carrot sticks with a side note of 'no' to chlorine.

My dogs love carrots! I keep a bag of baby carrots all the time. I use them for treats during the day!

I gave Zoe a carrot once - she chewed on it for quite a while, but then there were bits of carrot *everywhere* :-), so I haven't given her one since.  Most veggies she's completely uninterested in.  Broccoli - she plays with the florets by tossing them in the air, then discards without eating (I think cruciferous veggies are probably a no-no anyway).  My favorite veggie to give her -  I slice sweet potatoes and dry them in a low oven (200) until they are hard - that's her favorite treat (other than liver!). They keep for quite a while too.

Boy, lots of options. I'm looking forward to trying all of them. When I start cooking for our dog, my husband's going to give me a hard time about it...(he'll poke fun at the fact that I don't normally cook-he usually does all the cooking-). Oh well, he already thinks I treat Safiy like a human being-he kind of is in his own doggy way!

So far Safiy has only ate dog food(Blue Buffalo), but after reading all the post about food I think I'll incorporate boiled chicken with his food. But at the same time he's doing very well with it, maybe I shouldn't spoil a good thing.

We started giving Zoe a few bits of chicken, turkey, beef mixed in with her dry food at about 6 months and she did really well with that.  Word of caution though - subsequent meals without the additional meat treats were met with less enthusiasm - she got used to having meat with her meals!  There were times she just didn't eat her dry food.  I left it out and she finally would get around to eating it.

My friends four labs love carrots, my girls have no interest?
When the dogs were teething I gave them frozen green beans for treats! They loved them!
Green beans! I'll give them a try. Safiy's a little scavenger, he'll probably like them.

Love the frozen green bean suggestion - I'm going to try that!  Thanks!

Wonderful information! I am giving it a try.... No carrots in the fridge, I need to go to the store. I will use them (if he likes them as rewards). Considering they are messy, ill use them outside. I give Safiy filtered water... I'll keep my eye on the carrots being chlorinated. Perhaps Lassens or Trader Joes will have some. Thanks again!
