Yesterday was the second time we took Claire in to be spayed and was told by her vet that her urine had low specific gravity and he did not want to put her to sleep for the procedure.  Not really understanding exactly what this means.  This was also the situation 2 weeks ago as well.  Yesterday he is having us do a measured water consumption on her for 5 straight days to calculate how much she is actually drinking.  He also did a full u/a and culture on her yesterday.  The u/a showed a small amount of protein that he said he was not really concerned about but other than that it was normal.  Has anyone else ever had this problem with their doodle?  She acts perfectly normal.  Loves to run and play and just act silly.  Just putting this out there to see if anyone else has experienced this.

Specific gravity is a measure of the concentration of the urine and can be indicative of kidney function. Did the vet do any pre anesthetic bloodwork?

Yes, and it was all normal.

Low specific gravity means the urine is dilute. It can be secondary to many things including drinking excessively due to endocrine or other factors, kidney disease etc. I am surprised that they measure this. I Wouldn't worry until the work up is complete.

Thanks!  I'm trying not to.
