So the Dh is questioning - how do you walk two of them when it is dark and you are holding an umbrella?

I am working on getting a brother or sister..or at least having our home rescue ready?   notice the questions I am forced to answer...ABOVE)

not unreasonable I might add.  He (DH) does add that it would have to be a rescue (he pays attention). i recently found out that we are not totally excluded from a rescue since we don't have a physical fence.  we have to inquire further since we do rely on our electric fence somewhat....whatever....WHEN WE RETIRE we will be home and will be rescue ready....

Any one else in this "holding pattern" ?

I can't even figure out how you walk two if it's not raining and you have both hands free, lol.

I'm so glad you want to adopt a rescue dog. :)

I wrap the leash around my waist ( Loop through the handle part ) and have each one of them at both of my sides. Hands free!!

This would be my response too Kyoko.

They make connectors that goes from one dog to the other's collar. The one leash gets clipped in the middle and you only have one leash to hold. I have used it when I lived with my parents and walked their two dogs.

My answer is that they exercise themselves enough so that I NEVER feel an ounce of guilt over not going on walks in rain, snow, cold, HOT.

Love this answer!

Me too!

Walking two dogs is easy for me. I usually don't walk them in bad weather since they are free to run around outside if they want to. That said I generally hold the leashes in one hand so I could hold an umbrella if need be.

I may sound like a "broken record", but I think training is the key.  I've had to walk both dogs all the time since my DH had his knee replacement surgery, but because they're both good with loose leash walking it really isn't that difficult.

If you want to start off doing it the proper way, both dogs should learn to walk in a heel on your left. Just as you one dog, now there is two.
If you just fumble and let them cross cross all around you tend to get into trouble down the road when you find yourself in situations where it's imperative your dogs listen.
Sure there are free times and casual walking but if I had to do it all over again I would train the same way- two in a heel on the left.

Whatever you do don't use those couplers mentioned above with two dogs that are not trained with a spot on reliable heel.
Think - you are handcuffed to a toddler but that toddler is the same weight. Or, you are handcuffed to someone with ADHD. Anyway, my point is, both should have their own collars and leashes!! You can't correct one dog without confusing and correcting the other dog who was already doing it correctly. So all your training goes out the door. Plus is that fair to your dog? No!
So, two collars, two leashes, in a Heel on the right for a long time.
I have an old video of working with my two around here somewhere.

Thank you for addressing this, Joanne. That would be the issue for me, not just walking two dogs but walking two dogs properly.
