Samantha, who will be 6 in a few weeks) has had a recurrent UTI (or maybe she never got rid of it and I only noticed since it has been to cold to keep the door open for easy access to the yard) for over a year.

Blood and crystals in her urine. She is back on antibiotics for 10 days.

Here's the kicker!!

I bought a bag of SD CD! I didn't know what else to do! She needs a food with low protein. I truly trust my vet, he is on the panel that is making the decision to change the vaccine protocol so he is no dummy.

He wants her on it for a month, then run her labs again to see if it changes. If he sees significant changes he suggests we keep her on it for life. Needless to say I am not happy about this.

What else can I feed her that will help keep her kidneys healthy?? IF I have to I will feed her this for life but it make me crazy to even think that!

thanks!

Lynda,  Soy is also "Roundup ready".  When we moved  here almost 19 years ago the farmers tilled to control weeds.  Then they went to no till farming with the advent of the "Roundup ready" crops.  We used to have hundreds of toads but no more.  Also very few honey bees.  The weeds are becoming immune to the Roundup.    I am hoping that they will see the light at some point.   Better living is not through chemistry.  : (

Yes, soy is traditionally rotated with corn in the midwest, so it has been totally ruined also.  Canola is another crop that should be avoided.  My son grew up on soy milk because he was lactose intolerant, but won't touch soy milk, tofu, or any soy product now.  And it only gets worse.

Anne, this is sad and scary. Unbelievable that one corporation wields so much power and is able to do so much damaged virtually unchecked.

I do sign petitions protesting all this but I guess we should do more.

Fortunately, we have a great Senator here in Oregon who was in the forefront of getting  the "Monsanto Protection Act" removed from the Senate spending bill this year. Unfortunately, he made some serious enemies with that move and I'm not sure how much longer we'll have him....:( I was so proud of him! :)

Sad isn't it? The big companies and tycoons have lots of money to spend against people they don't like.

Sorry to hear that Samantha is having chronic problems.  I have no ideas for you but like the others trust that Karen will guide you to a better, healthier alternative than SD :(.   Remember with SD it's short term gain and long term pain! We don't want that for your baby!

Adrianne - sorry to hear this.  I went through something similar with Maci and have added a cranberry supplement as well as feeding her Wysong Epigen for her evening meal (maybe more protein than you are looking for) but it is starch free.  Maci's "pet nutritionist" told me, as well as some research I did, that starch in the pup's diet can contribute to the crystals.  My vet had suggested SD as well and I looked at him like he had three heads and he knew I wasn't going there so we tried a more holistic route first.  Try to get her to drink more water too, which will help flush her system.

I am sorry to hear about Samantha. Clearly there are better alternatives and here is the place for them. I hope she recovers quickly. Someone else suggested cranberry extract and it is good for UTIs.

You might also check out D-Mannose which is the active ingredient from cranberries. It comes in a powder form and is much easier to use than cranberries.  Here is a link to Dr. Becker's web site and an article that explains how to use it. The aricle is about cats but it works equally as well for dogs or people.  I have used it successfully myself in the past.

This one has more info about bladder issues in dogs and cats and is a bit of a product ad but also has some useful info:

Sadly most things on that website are ads for products and Dr. Mercola is full of ..... Not that cranberries or perhaps even D-mannose is bad.

Exactly.
