I have VPI for my Doodle who just turned one and his sister Emily, a 10 year old Golden Retriever. Shortly after getting the policy in place Emily was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. With surgery and 2 days in the hospital her bill exceeded $5,000. I had $100 deductible with the best available coverage they offers. When my check came they reimbursed $2,100.

I have been reading insurance contracts for 28 years, and theirs is the goofiest to date. I am not sure if they all read like that and reimburse the same.  That is the down side.

The good side of this story is that I got reimbursed $2,100 of a $5,000+ bill!  They are a good company as far as dealing with and they pay promptly.

Take a close look at the amount of $ you will spend extra  for the wellness. When I add it up and then called my vet to see what his costs were going to be, it was a wash. In other words, I would have paid an additional $400 a year for a max of $400 towards wellness. (or something close as I don't' have the info in front of me right at the moment)

Bottom Line: Get insurance. You just never know. The Golden never had insurance until I got Murfee. Then I thought why not add her while I am doing his. Like I said, less than 1 month later she is in surgery. Many on here suggest another company so poke around.

Good Luck.

Terri

Thank you so much, Terri. I was checking between pet plan and VPI. I have a question Terri. When I apply pet insurance how fast a puppy will be cover by insurance? Thanks

Typically they have a 2 week waiting period. I am considering moving Murfee to PetPlan. I have no option but to keep Emily with VPI because of her age as well as her cancer.
