Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

My Goldendoodle Archie just turned 1 yesterday, but a quick question in regards to doodles.  I heard they are prone to throwing up? Is this true?  I ask because my puppy seems to vomit often (when I say often maybe once a month?) Its always in the morning (5-6am) and it is usually always white foam....only once in a blue moon is it actual food or substance that he throws up.

I have also noticed that when he throws up it seems to be mornings in which he hadn't gone to poop before bed (he wouldn't go when I took him on his 10-11pm walk).

Thanks!

Sam

I would not say that Goldendoodles are prone to vomiting any more than any other dog. Some do, some don't.

Vomiting bile or foam first thing in the a.m. is usually due to having an empty stomach for so many hours. Giving a small snack in the evening before bedtime usually alleviates it.

Ok, thanks!

When you say a small snack...would you say hald a serving of his normal breakfast/dinner? Or would you give him a treat?

Not half of his usual meal, maybe a quarter; it depends on how much food a meal is for him, as you feed different amounts depending on the calorie content and the dog's size. One dog might be getting two cups of food per meal, another might be getting less than one cup.

A good size dog biscuit or two can also be used.

Yeah, as of now we feed him 2 cups per meal (2 meals a day Breakfast and Dinner).  He is eating his dinner usually around 6ish...and goes to bed around 11 or 12.  So maybe he is hungry? He is 1yr old and about 55lbs.

Maybe feeding him too much? According to the bag on the Science Diet he should be getting 3 and a 1/2 to 5 cups per day. Hes getting 4 cups a day.

Your vet could tell you if he's height/ weight proportionate. I also want to refer you to the fabulous DoodleKisses Food Group. Before I got my dog, I had no idea how to pick a healthy dog food. I was feeding poor Cocoa dog food that was full of fillers such as corn grits and wheat gluten. Some of the protein came from China. I had no idea!

Believe it or not, Science Diet is very expensive but not healthy at all! The Science part refers to the science of making lots of money! You'll find a list of recommended foods when you go to the food group, and that may solve your problem altogether!
Here's a link to the Food Group. Go to the Recommended Brands and you'll find lots of healthy choices.

That's exactly what we do....one biscuit for Guinness (mini) and two for Murph (standard) and it seems to help quite a bit.  Even with that on occasion they will vomit bile very early in the morning, but now that's the exception.

We give a small handful of kibble when he has the bile vomit in the morning.  I guess an evening snack would be better to prevent it, but it doesn't happen all that often, so we forget.

I would also encourage you to check out the food group and make a food switch. SD is not a quality kibble. Also, we give a small snack to our puppy before bed. It doesn't take much to take the edge off!
