Puppy and Toddler

My puppy is now 13 weeks old and I also have a 19 month old daughter. Our puppy has been doing great now with housetraining, but she does continue to have excitement urination.  We have been able to control this by eliminating the x-pen, which seemed to elicit urination when we would lean over to pick her up.  Having full run of the kitchen she does not respond to either myself or my husband with urination.  We noticed that she generally gets more excite when my step children are home, but they are old enough to be taught to ignore the puppy until she calms down and then to initiate contact with her by throwing a toy versus leaning down to pet her.  On the other hand, I don't want to keep my daughter and the puppy completely separated.  If I bring my daughter into the kitchen while puppy is on a leash, she of course approaches the puppy immediately and the puppy urinates with excitement. Are there any suggestions?  Anyone who has dealt with this?  Also, besides the peeing, I of course want to teach the puppy not to jump on her considering that they are now about the same weight and the puppy will quickly out grown my daughter. I don't have any experience with excitement urination, but I have had a puppy with young children. I'm afraid your puppy WILL jump on your daughter. She WILL nip her! This is what puppies do :)

I would keep her tethered to your belt or a piece of furniture when your daughter is around. I also suggest that you never leave the two of them alone together. This is what I did during that period when Cocoa was in the "playful puppy" phase.

I also taught my children how to reduce the frequency of the situation. I taught them not to run around and act like puppies, or Cocoa old treat them like puppies. If the kids were really active and Cocoa was getting overstimulated I would put her in her crate.

It will be a challenging time, but once you get through it your daughter and dog will be best friends! Just remember, this is a phase!!!

Thank you for your response. We never let them alone together. I'm just hoping to expose them to one another in tiny increments so they become used to each other.

No experience with toddler but Sawyer did the excited pee thing as a puppy. He stopped at around 6 months or so.

Puppies get excited and puppies pee...the good news is that , in most instances, puppies grow out of this stage.
