Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Hey guys! I went shopping today for my Kona (who comes home next week) and noticed that Kong has their own brand of treats to put inside of the Kong. This is my first time ever using a Kong and my first Doodle, so I'm curious if you guys would recommend using the Kong brand treats or is it okay to use other things such as peanut butter, dog biscuits, etc to fill the Kong? Thanks in advance!

We just recently had a little convo over in TFG about how Kong treats would most likely not make the recommended list. I'm sure you can find treats on the recommended treat list that will serve the same purpose if you didn't want to just use things such as yogurt, peanut butter, bananas, etc
Good advice. And here is the link to the Recommended Treat Brands.
I would not use the Kong treats.
Lots of good suggestions from the others who have responded here.
Great suggestions, as always! Thanks guys!
Perfect - this is so helpful!! I'm so glad I found this website - I was pretty much clueless beforehand. I'll post updates as soon as she comes home :)
I use pureed baby food, carrot and beef or sweet potato and do a layered thing using plain yogurt, blueberries and a little peanut butter to plug the hole at the bottom. I freeze them and they go down a treat. You can add chopped apple, banana and carrot bits too and a little kibble. I definitely wouldn't use the Kong branded filler. They do the rubber things well, not the fillers.
Awesome, thanks a bunch!!
I've done the following for a puppy sized kong - I make a batch of it and fill about 5 kongs and freeze them. Per kong: 3 T cooked oatmeal, 2 T nonfat plain yogurt, 1 T peanut butter and l/s, l/f chicken stock to moisten a bit, then sometimes i add 1 T of chopped banana or cooked carrot or craisins. Zoe loves them - keeps her busy for a good 30 minutes. I once bought the kong filler and used it a few times, then looked at the ingredients list - threw it away. I also noticed if i used too much peanut butter or other fatty items, the stools were icky, so i cut down the fat (that was before I discovered DK and the wonderful food group et al). I'll have to try the PB2 that's been mentioned so many times here.
Perfect!! I'll try some of your suggestions. Thanks a bunch!
