The one time this happened with Calla she did have a UTI. I had no clue before that.

Hopefully, it was just a one-time thing. Keep us posted.

Was she dreaming? Not realizing what she was doing by chance?

Not sure.. she started to clean her privates when I noticed it .. I suppose they can leak just like us... :)

This just happened to us recently - our 18 month old female goldendoodle has had 4 incidences of urinating in her sleep over the past 3 weeks. We took her to the vet - no UTI and her lab work all looks normal. I did some research and found out that this is not uncommon in females that have been spayed. It is a side effect of producing little or no estrogen. Estrogen helps to keep the elasticity in the bladder and if there is none present, the bladder relaxes when they sleep and the urine just dribbles out. Our poor pup has been so embarrassed. My vet called today and recommended a drug prescribed for incontinence called ProIn. After researching it, I found that it was discontinued for use in humans as it can cause high blood pressure and stroke. Problem is, it causes these same side effects on dogs. I found a drug called Incurin (estriol) which is a form of estrogen replacement for dogs. It works well with fewer side effects so I asked my vet if she could prescribe it and she seemed offended. She told me they usually only prescribe ProIn and she had never heard of Incurin and didn't feel comfortable prescribing it. After I mentioned the side effects of ProIn, she said, "well, I've hardly ever seen it cause a stroke in dogs." I thought, well ...if she's seen it at all...and still prescribes it, that's enough for me to find another vet! Either way, it's a good idea to take your pup to the vet to make sure she's ok.

Hi Gayle,  I've just come across this comment by fluke.  If I had known about how the estrogen affects the bladder I would have chosen to have Yarrow spayed after her first heat.  We've been having some issues with relapses in potty training, although I don't think it's the same issue your poor girl has.  I chock Yarrow's accidents up to being out of her mind with pent up puppy energy.  Her pee in the white snow looks quite clear so it doesn't seem to be UTI either.

I live in a small mountain ski resort town and there is only one vet.  She has been practicing for over 20 years and her specialty is dogs and cats.  She did a nice job with Yarrow's spay surgery, so I don't question her skills at all, but I do question her integrity.  When I took baby Yarrow in for her rabies vaccine, the vet asked me how she did in the car.  I said she didn't much like it and whined.  The vet then handed me a pamphlet and sales pitch on Zylkene, a calming supplement.  Are you kidding?  She's a puppy - she whines sometimes!  She had the pamphlets in her examination room!

I guess a really great vet with skills, knowledge, compassion and integrity is hard to find.  I hope you found one.
