I'm sorry if this is duplicated somewhere but I'm having a tough time deciding on a food for Spike. The breeder started him on Royal Canin. Which isn't a brand I'm fond of and want him off of it. We've only had Spike two and half weeks so and he's 10 weeks old. So I don't want to switch quite yet. Lots of changes for him already.
Originally I wanted to go with Orijen. Which is a touted brand on here from the looks of it. However I literally can't handle the kibble. I'm highly allergic to fish. I can't even handle the salmon flavour whiskas temptations that my neighbours cat LOVES. I know Orijen is made by the same company that makes Acana. But the ingredients are similar so I'm worried about how I'd be with it.
Another issue with the above two brands is that they actually scare me. I am a proud Canadian and these are both Canadian brands..... BUT there have been A LOT of problems in recent years with Alberta beef and I just don't want to risk it. And if that's not enough. I cross the border a lot to go visit family and Spike will be coming with us. When there are meat issues Orijen is the first brand they stop from crossing the border.
So I've been looking at blue buffalo. Which formula I have NO clue. Limited ingredient. Longevity. Etc. I'm lost. Totally and completely. I have handled the kibble and don't seem to have and issue. I will just avoid the more fishy flavours. I do know that blue can be very fatty. So i know to stick with the lower feeding dose.
I want what's best for both Spike and myself and I really don't know what to do. I also need to get a North American brand so I can cross the picky US border with it.
Again sorry if this is a redundant topic but I really need advice!

If you want to go with Blue Buffalo, I recommend the Wilderness Puppy formula.

BTW, there's only one Acana formula that contains beef, so if that's your hesitation on using it, it's easily avoided.

I have never heard of these issues, and I do an awful lot of reading and research on dog food. Champion's quality control is impeccable, but it's easy to avoid formulas with beef if that's your concern.

I would guess irks Ranchlands which we're just finishing up : (

I wouldn't worry, F, I cannot find a single thing on this, and Champion is very transparent in their disclosure.

I'm not really worrying. It couldn't be undone anyway.

If Alberta beef is an issue, I'm in big trouble. Most of our beef comes from Alberta.

I suspect some of ours does too.
There is nothing wrong with Alberta beef now. I'm sure I eat it all the time. But there has been issues A lot in the past. And as recent as two year ago. Which puts it on a hot list at the border. Anything Canadian based actually. I know Orijen is and has been fine. I can't us it though because of me. Not the beef. I just used Orijen as an example because that's what I wanted him on. I just lose sleep over choosing the wrong brand for spike. I worked in a pet store when all those terrible recalls were going on. I've seen first hand the consequences of not choosing an above board brand. I'm horrified to think that because I can't use a good brand like Orijen for spike ( due to my allergy) I will choose wrong. I'm not overly familiar with anything in the dog world.
What are your concerns with Alberta beef? Bovine spongiform encephalopathy or mad cow disease? I feed Acana and I hope it's not that.

I couldn't find any info more recent than 10 years ago, and there have been no issues with shipments of any of the Champion Foods since I've been aware of the company.

What was 10 years ago. Sadly I never thought about this. But there was a case of BSE just two years ago.

There hasn't been any issues with Orijen that I can see in terms of recalls. I wasn't clear. My issue is my allergy. Which kills it right there for me. Along with it being a Canadian brand. Bought in Canada. There have been issues of a single person bringing their dogs food across the border on trips. I have several friends who use it who've had to relinquish it at the US border and scramble to find food on the US side of the border. The US border people can be really strict. We can't even bring over kinder surprise eggs!! Well we can. But getting caught doesn't make it worth it. My poor cousins will never know the joy of a plastic toy in a chocolate egg.
IF there is another issue with Alberta beef. Even though Orijen is fine. They stop it at the border.
