Bella, has been panting alot the last two days, notice at night when she is in bed with us and can hear her and feel her panting. Just notice she is panting and don`t know why she has water, she drinks, sleeps with fan on, was holding off on getting her groomed till winter is over, would can it be? I did change her food last week to earthborn.

I don't think changing her food would cause her to pant.  Does she appear to be in any pain?  Dilated pupils?  If this is out of the norm for her, and you see no obvious reason, I think maybe a Vet visit maybe in order.

It's warm in bed, lol. Other bodies close by make for a lot of heat. Dogs don't sweat, the only way they can cool themselves off is by panting. If it only happens at night in bed with you, I wouldn't worry a bit. And the food change has nothing at all to do with it.

If this is unusual behaviour for her, I would bring her to the vet - I don't want to scare you but our last doodle Zak starting panting when her heart started to deteriorate quickly. She had EPI for three years and was gradually going downhill. We noticed the panting and she also did not want to jump off of the bed or out of the car.  We took her to the vet and they advised us that her heart was giving out.  But they did tell us that unusual panting is definitely a sign of heart problems.

I agree that a vet check is in order if she has just started this behavior out of the blue. It sounds like she always sleeps with you but hasn't been panting until the last 2 days, so her coat wouldn't have changed much in that amount of time. Panting can be a sign of pain or other medical condition so it would be good to rule that out.

Since her coat is long, she may just be getting warm.  Today it reached 63 degrees here and we were out playing ball and within minutes, both of my doodles ran over and laid down in the shade.  They coats are only about 1.5 inches, so I would not have guessed they would get warm so quickly.  If it continues to worry you, take her in for a quick checkup.  I wish her well.

Thanks everyone for the advise. Bella did good last night and no panting and when she was panting those two nights no pain, maybe she just was warmer then usual, her coat is about 3 to 3 1/2 inches..Will take her to vet if it starts again. Thank you all for replying.  She is my baby, makes my world a happy place

Glad it seems to have worked itself out!  My doodle sleep in the porcelain shower in the summer to stay cool!

Spud panted so badly in his crate as a puppy, it sounded like he was on his death bed.   Around 5 months old, I did let him sleep outside of his crate and he was only crated when we left home.

He moved constantly to the cool floor to make himself comfortable.  He also gets up at night and gets a drink.

He still does this once in awhile at night.  He then gets up and moves to make himself more comfortable.

I think your dog is hot or thirsty or both.

But, take a video if it bothers you and show your vet

We also have a new puppy, and notice that she pants a lot at night too..but it is only intermittently, which makes me agree with others that it is heat related..I know I give off heat like a furnace when I sleep!!

My Sassparilla pants heavily 24/7 and vet contributes it to a combination of her anxiety and warm blooded.  She even pants in her sleep!  If its new definitely get it checked out but it could be she's warm and trying to cool off?  I only react now when she's not panting which isn't very often.  She drives my friends and family crazy between the panting and playing, we can't hear the TV! lol
