Just when you think my little Sasha looks so cute with that big rawhide bone and how happy she is with it! for three weeks now on occasion I let her play with the stupid thing, mind you I don't ever buy her raw hides, last night at midnight... to the emergency animal clinic! stomach and intestines clogged up, puking her brains out. Under medications now in hopes she passes the raw hide fragments otherwise surgery. this s*** should be banned with as much crap I've read about them online in the wee hours. Sharing this with all you fellow animal lovers..little did I know about this. Priceless needless to say, but no cost outweighs taking care of her.

Sasha underwent surgery but did not make it. She was only 3yrs old.

 

 

I'm trying to spread the word on how dangerous these things are...I never knew they were THAT dangerous!  I personally am never buying rawhides for my doodle again, if only for the mere lack of packaging WARNING indicating the dangerous LEVEL they posses.

 

Who hasn't wanted to spoil their baby just a little extra with a BIG bone??  If there were warnings on size REQUIREMENTS, perhaps people would be less apt to kill their own dogs out of sheer unkowing delight...

I am so sorry to hear about Sasha.  We have seen too many posts like this.  I am glad you have shared this so all the new puppy owners and older dogs owners will have second thoughts about feeding rawhide.  Neither of my two have ever had rawhide and NEVER WILL!

As new nieve puppy owners one walks down the aisles at Petsmart and sees an entire aisle of rawhide.  Every shape, size, color, and wonders "How can these be so bad if a store the size of Petsmart devotes an entire aisle to them"!  I honestly cannot answer that.  We are all so desperate for something for our puppy(s) to chew on to keep them from chewing up the house.  Some say Nylabones are bad, others love antlers, others hate them.  Some like bully sticks and himalayan chews while I just feel there are too many calories in them and they don't last long at all ... this subject has probably been one that I've struggled with the most.  Wanting to give them something, but wanting to keep them safe.

So very sad - so sorry to hear your news!!!  Thank you for passing on this info.  We are bringing home a new puppy in a few days and I have been worried about what is ok and what is not.  My parents always gave their dogs rawhide.  I will definitely steer clear.  Maybe people would chime in on what is safe for puppies and dogs as we all know they need to chew.

We used to buy those great big bags of rawhide at Price Club and our lab ate them up all the time but when she got older she was less interested.  After we heard the dangers, we never gave to Quincy  

We do give bully sticks to Quincy, but throw them out once they are shorter than 3 to 4 inches.

I do what Lori does, give bully sticks and throw them out at around 4 inches. The problem I have with those and with antlers is Max can eat those up in about 15 minutes so I don't give the bully sticks that often, and the anters are far too expensive here to get a 15 minute chew out of 20$. . I do go to a local butcher and buy raw cow bones, they are kinda gross but the bones are safer and last longer.

Julie, that doesn't sound right. The bully sticks, yes; but an antler should last for months. The dog really should only be able to scrape away at it, not actually eat it. Are you buying the split antlers?

I only bought antlers on line at the Antler Pantry and they were split and made for bigger dogs.  They have sizes.  Well, some of you know my story.  Gracie Doodle is a voracious chewer and can eat an antler in an hour or so.  She cracked her two bottom three-rooted molars and had to have root canals done = $4000.00 not insured!  I posted the alert about a year ago.  We don't do rawhides, bones or antlers!!

Wow, that is good to know.  My Tina chews on the antlers for a good bit, they're the only thing that lasts.  Target has smaller ones for about half the price of Pet Supermarket.  I began giving them to her before anything else beecause a neighbor once told me "rawhide" was bad.  He never said why...and sometimes his information is not completely accurate.  I learned that the hard way with Advantix vs Trifexis and camping...

I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of precious  Sasha.  Thank you for sharing your friend's story.  It is devastating to lose a loved one; 2 or 4-legged.  May Sasha wonderful and loving memories help all of you through this difficult time.
