Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi, i am a new mommy to a almost 11 week old Goldedodle puppy named Sochi. she is adorable and we love her but are so frustrated! she is on her second round of anti biotics and is peeing everywhere!! poor thing is so cinfused and so are we :( someone suggested i come here and get some advice on diet and how to help her get over this uti!!! the breeder gave the littelr iams and gave us a bag so thats what we have been giving her. i see from here and other sites that is a really bad dog food :( but i dont want to complicate her possible reaction to anibiotics and diahrea with a new food till she is over this uti. also dont even think the potty training is working becasue she squats and pees in the house right after she has gone outside and peed...sigh any advice much appreciated!!

Not sure what to recommend, but she's sure a cutey.

thanks leslie & Yogi!!!!  im hoping someone sees this who has some experience. i looked into other discussions but nothing i saw was about uti's in puppies...maybe i will go look again. hopefully someone will respond who knows a little about this....

how old is your puppy?

Yogi is going to be 7 months old next week

First of all Sochi is beautiful, I'm sorry your going through this with her and can relate. When I brought my puppy home he had terrible diarrhea, my fault because I changed the food too soon so good you don't change from the Iam's too quickly and you will get excellent advise here on how to change and best food to feed as I did.

As for peeing in the house in my opinion and what I did because my puppy was pooping like crazy I kept him in a x-pen with papers on the floor in half of the pen and a towel for a bed on the other side. I'm not a fan of paper training and intended on crate training but with so much pooping it was impossible in the create and best not to have them potting everywhere as it will be easier to break the paper habit than if the puppy gets used to going everywhere.

I wish you good luck with your puppy and this site is a wonderful place and a great help.

thanks so much!! the funny thing with Sochi is she can keep her crate dry all night but once she is out its peeing all day which i dont understand but am thankful for

When we brought our puppy home almost 7 years ago, she too was on antibiotics (which ended up being two rounds).  She had a parasite (worm) and was on the medication for a couple of weeks.  During that time I did everything I had been told and read to start the potty training.  She was so good but at night she would wet her crate even though we got up in the middle of the night to take her outside.  I was so frustrated that I called a trainer and the first thing she asked me was,"is she on an antibiotic?"  I told her she was and she said that as long as they are on antibiotics they won't train because it is a diuretic which makes them pee all the time or feel that they need to pee all the time.  Sure enough, the minute we finished the medication, Gracie never peed in her crate or on the floor again.  She was very easy to train.  Doodles are very smart.  You just need to wait out the medication before really trying to train her.  But do continue to go through the motions so she gets what it is you want her to do. I really wish vets would tell people about this and that all the puppy books would address it as well.  Good Luck!

thanks so much Nancie! that is very interesting i know the uti can cause the peeing but never realized the anitbiotics cause it too! the weird thing is she can keep her crate dry all night but once out of crate she pees all day! i feel bad for her and yes vets tell you nothing about side effects. thanks

At 11 weeks, she is still very young. And while the UTI, is certainly not helping, she couldn't possibly be expected to be trained. How often are you getting her out?
A pup needs to be taken out every hr on the hr, after every meal and each and every time she has just woken up. Once she has gone, praise the heck out of her....repeat, repeat, repeat! Many of us have incorporated " potty bells". A string of bells hung on the door you use to take her out. Beach and every time you go out with her , have her hit the bells with her paw or nose. She will soon get the idea of alerting you to her needs by hitting the bells.
Picking water up around 7 ish will help her make it through the night.

yes i agree that she is young and we are taking her out 4 times or more  an hour easily and she will squat and go outside and then come back in and pee too . maybe my issue is im not sure how much the uti is inhibiting her progress. the strange thing is she can be in her crate all night and not make any mess there. and we have been hesitant to take her water away at 7:00 because she has the uti and seems to want to drink more at night and i have been told she needs the water to flush out uti.we actually tried the bell but she was going down and ringing it as a game all the time

Well, this is not a food issue, but I will address that part of it. Do not change her food at all until she has been off the meds for a couple of weeks.

It's important to always give probiotics or at least yogurt any time a dog is taking antibiotics. Give her a couple of tablespoons of plain unflavored non fat yogurt twice a day, separate from the meds by at least two hours. It won't help with the potty training, but it will help maintain normal gut flora which is important for normal stool formation.

thanks Karen!
