Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi im new to the group but was told this group would be helpful for tips on uti's and how to help our puppy get over it and also is it even realistic to train her to go outside while she has her uti? Sochi is our goldendoodle and she is  almost 11 weeks old. we are on our second round of antibiotics which we just started yesterday. sochi has been with us for 3 weeks and came to us with this uti :( it has been frustrating because she is so good but just cant control her constant peeing! we are giving her cranberry supplements everyday and try to get as much water into her as possible!

LOL...we've got two threads going....just saw your reply on her going out and coming in and peeing almost immeadiately.
Maybe try keeping her out longer to go yet again. I learned very quickly, that Enzo was a " double pee'er". She's go and come in and pee again within minutes. I found keeping her out, she'd pee again and the problem was solved. Thankfully, she outgrew the double thing!

I've gone through the UTI thing several times with puppies.  With Little AnnaBelle I learned that I needed to give her lots of time when we went out because she would pee like 6 times.  Or at least squat that many times.  I'm a little surprised that you are in to a second round of antibiotics and still aren't seeing any relief.  Normally once the get on the antibiotic within a couple days things are looking up.  Did she just start a few one or how many days has she been on it now?

Lucy we got her at 8 weeks and found out right away she had uti and got her on antibiotics for it. she is now 11 weeks and started a second round of them 3 days ago. the vet said she still has a borderline infection. i am talking to others who have had this problem and many are saying it can be a ph inbalance and i want to take her off her dog food and switch to something better but want to be careful not to upset her stomach. thankfully the amoxicillan doesnt seem to be bothering her so maybe i will mix  a better brand in with her Iams and gradually get her off the "garbage" we have been unknowingly feeding her :( so much to learn!!! and i had read alot prior to getting our baby but you just cant cover everything i guess. i had read how some foods were better but our breeders talked us into iams saying thats what they feed all thier dogs and its a good brand :(

Better food is a great idea but the infections are not caused by a pH imbalance. Lucy may have an inverted vulva. You can search here fod discussions involving that. But UTI are common especially in female puppies.
Yup...Enzo just over an UTI. Sort of surprised Sochi isn't getting quicker relief.

The infection could have not been fully treated, the bacteria could have been resistant to the antibiotic, etc.

Thanks F! Makes sense! Does this happen often? That the bacteria is resistant to the antibiotic?

It certainly can happen but I don't know the frequency for puppy UTIs. Most often I would guess the infection was not treated long enough or doses were missed etc. And given the anatomy it is very easy for a new infection to start. The urethral opening is in the vaginal canal. And some pups have inverted vulvas early on. Lots of factors are involved. But Calla had one UTI and since has had none, TG.

Thanks once again for the explanation, F ( I couldn't reply directly to your last post). Hoping, we have the same luck with Enz...no more UTIs! She did bounce back very quickly...hoping that could possibly be a good sign!( or at least, it was not a very serious infection)

here is convo with another owner on here and what she said food and ph balanPermalink Reply by denise rumbaugh yesterday

in some breeds the food they eat causes their body's PH to rise in turn causing a bladder infection and in some cases like jace started to crystallize. I had him on blue diamond thinking this is a high quality food. it did not agree with his system and raised his ph. I went from that to Red Bandana which he tolerated very well. we finished the last round of antibiotics and have not had any issues since. jace really doesn't like that food so I switched him to canine cavier holistic of which he likes even less. lol but it is made to keep the ph balance in check. when i am switching his food I mix his old in with his new to try and avoid stomach upset. I also add some cooked rice or pumpkin. this helps with diarrhea and stomach upset esp while on antibiotics. I ran into a gentleman that trains dogs for security and behavioral issues who told me these breeds of dogs seem to have higher risks for bladder infections. apparently they play hard and get dehydrated quicker than most breeds. which can also start uti's. he suggested in the summer or times when he has played hard outside to put some pedialyte brand or generic, in his water to flush his system out if his urine is dark. to put half water, half pedialyte. works like a charm!! a couple of times and it's gone. also he said to add some warn water to their kibble so they get water that way also and to give wet food on occasion in their dry for added water. too many antibiotics can cause stomach issues later. I certainly didn't want to deal with that. jace can get very gassy from his food so I give him a doggie probiotic now and then. I know some if this may sound extreme, but it isn't expensive and the preventive maintenance is well with the hundreds on vet bills. I hope this helps.

The only part of this I agree with is avoiding dehydration and making sure your puppy gets plenty of water.
