What the heck, the vet gave my pup Tramadol, that's what I took for pain. Is it safe? And how do I know if he realky needs it?

Why did your pup need pain meds? If he seems fine I would keep it on hold.
He had a bit of a limp after a play at the park. He would jump super high to catch his frisbee. I went to get his pain meds from when he was neutered and I just now realized they were the same as what I had a few weeks ago. I only gave him one after his neuter because he was back to his happy playful self the next day. I thought I'd give him one to see if that would help. And if he continues to walk funny I will take him in. I want to do what's ultimately the best.

When Sully was about 4-5 months old, he would literally scream with pain when you touched him. Our vet was on vacation, so he saw her partner who diagnosed him with Panosteitis and gave him tramadol.  Scared the heck out of me and turns out (thank goodness) Tank had rolled him down the hill in the backyard one too many time (our regular vet got  back from vacation).  The little fellow was extremely sore from head to toe. After a week to 10 days, he was OK.  From my experience it's for moderate to severe pain (which Sully had at the time) but  none of them have had it since that time.

Well then the meds may help him. He seems a bit sore after our play day at the park.

I would second F's question, why does he need pain meds?

Tramadol is a good pain medication for dogs when there is a need for one.

He is actually doing much better now. But I was concerned because after a hard play at the park I was afraid he'd overdid it with so much jumping- a couple of times he seemed to come down awkwardly... But he's doing much better now.

Good. I'd just let him rest and see if he's OK. He may be sore for a couple of days. I would try to keep playtime a little less energetic.

Our Savannah is on Tramadol........I actually like Tramadol because it is not a barbiturate and there is no withdrawal.  Savannah is on it for her bladder stones.  I have taken it before too and it really does work well :)

Like I said, Savannah takes this medication.  We only give it to her when she is in pain due to the bladder stones.

Hollie, I'm sorry to hear your dog has bladder stones... How did you figure that out? With an X Ray? Just curious. I didn't know that about Tramadol, it not being a barbiturate and no withdrawal. I'm always skeptical with prescriptions whether it's for my family or pets. I'm glad to know that. I do know that it worked very well for me when I took it. Thanks for the info,
