Alarming Incident w/ Neighbor's Invisible Fence
Hi, all.
One of our neighbors has an invisible fence. I was out walking Truffle when he approached it and it suddenly looked like he was having a seizure. It happened twice in quick succession. It then occurred to me that he might have been electrocuted by the fence.
When it was happening, he looked like a Looney Tunes cartoon character - with his legs splayed in different directions. He's fine - we proceeded along on on our walk without further incident, but it was truly scary for a brief instant.
Has anyone ever experienced this before? It must be a malfunction, no?

Joanne, this is crazy! I wonder if that's what caused sweet Teddy's freak-outs in town. He may not have gotten an actual shock but he sensed something was wrong. Yikes!

Very common. There are often reports, usually in the winter, in NYC. Usually it's a short caused by salt corroding things but not always.

That's crazy. With so many walking on the sidewalks of NYC! But no wonder they are vigilant
I wonder why so many dogs are electrocuted walking? Is it because we wear rubber shoes?
Jennifer, since you live in New Jersey, and the so does the company that was in these reports, can you contact them also?
Ask them what you can do? Ask them if you need to remove all metals from the collars and leashes? Would that help?

I think shoes do protect us from many of these incidents. I don't think removing metal would help at all.

The plot thickens! The company is called "The Power Survey Company" and I just had a great conversation with one of the guys there. Their office is not far from where I live and they're sending one of their custom trucks out to do a drive-by today to see if their equipment picks up any kind of leak signal. And they'll report back to me later.
Our town's power lines are all above ground, so he doesn't think it's related to the public utility lines. However, he doesn't discount the possibility that the property in question may have some underground lines - related to either the invisible fence or something else - that might be causing the issue.
Anyway, he seemed very interested in this mystery - and I think it's awesome that they're willing to have a look - not just to help out, but for their own edification. Their clients are not individuals, but large cities and municipalities. For example, they comb the streets of NYC once a month to test all the power lines. They even have clients overseas.
I will let you all know once I hear back from him.

What kind of company is that? A private power company or something. I have Rockland Electric up here in Bergen County.

We're in Essex County - PSE&G. We're practically neighbors!
According to their Web site, they "provide contact voltage detection and asset management services to electric utilities and municipalities worldwide through the utilization of cutting edge technology, advanced data management systems, and a team of trained professionals."
The large utilities also hire them to do their testing - like ConEd, for example.
