Lucy will be getting spayed and I just wondered if there's anything I should know or expect.  We're just new to the world of puppies so I really know nothing!

Hi! Maggie was spayed 4-14...what I didn't expect was how sick she was going to look...I too have never had a puppy/dog before so I didn't know what to be prepared for. I was so worried about her that I actually slept on the floor by her crate all night. She had a very glassy eye look from the gel they put in their eyes and her fur looked like she was ill...anyway, 24 hours later and she was looking better and eating and drinking like her old self...she was also very laid back for several days (kinda wish she was laid back now! Lol).
I was given pain medicine, antibiotic and a cream to put on her incision...can barely see the incision now . Vet said if she started to pace and pant a lot that means she's hurting...Maggie never had that.
Please don't worry, Lucy will do great!

Thank you!  I'm glad to hear that Maggie did so well.  You're awesome to sleep by her crate!  Thanks for putting my mind at ease :)  I'll be grateful for a little taste of "laid back Lucy!"

Good luck, Lucy! We just had our Sophie spayed last Wednesday. She was very sleepy the day of and a little sluggish the day after but by 48 hours she was back to her old hyper self! For better or for worse.. ;)!

The only issue we had was her hatred for the cone. As silly as it looks, we used an old T shirt and made "puppy shorts" for her. We put her hind legs through the two arm holes and her tail through the neck hole and then tied the shirt body around her chest. It completely covers her incision and she leaves it alone for the most part. Only downside is needing to take it off for potty breaks. We still make her wear her cone when we aren't home just to make sure she doesn't get the T shirt off but the T shirt has really been a life-saver.

Wishing Lucy a healthy recovery! :)

Oh my goodness, Sophie is darling!!! Love her coat and color. How old is she?

Look at her! what a beauty, wow.

We did the same thing!  The vet said a full 2 weeks with the cone, but that was *not* going to happen.  The T-shirt was a great compromise.  After 3 days and I knew Zoe wasn't after the stitches, I even took the t-shirt off.  I think the biggest problem we had was keeping her 'calm'.  We started walks 4 days in.

Good luck!! They are super resilient and she'll bounce back in no time!

Boomer was neutered a few days before we picked him up. The medication they put him on ended up giving him terrible diarrhea for 4-5 days. Made things really hard on us especially because he wasn't potty trained and was in a completely new environment. But it's been all uphill from there! (until he broke his leg)

To combat the diarrhea we mixed some canned pumpkin into his diet.

We have had both boys and girls; the girls are definitely more "out of it" when you pick them up.  They have always had more nausea as well, probably due to longer anesthesia time and needing a bit more pain meds.  We did do the t-shirt. Didn't need the cone of shame for some, did for others I sleep with them the first night at least.

I personally recommend what I did with my Torrey: we watched the entire "Anne of Green Gables" series over the next couple of days!  Chicks only!

Hoka (boy, 5.5 months) was actually neutered yesterday, but truly I think the boys have a different experience. He was wide awake when I picked him up at 5pm. He had some water at 6, a half meal at 7 and the other half at 8. He was ravenous.  I had him sleep with me with a short (4ft) leash wrapped on my wrist.  Ended up putting on the cone for about 5 hours overnight.  Giving him really good chew toys has helped keep him away from incision, as he is also teething.

It sounds like Hoka is doing well, Marie! I am glad. I am really dreading this for Daisy but we will wait until summer so I am out of work.

He's been a total trooper!  I can't believe he is totally ignoring the cone.  It's like he is not even wearing it!  What a good boy!

I know both Torrey and Katniss had it worse than any of our boys, they were both down for a day or two.  But Daisy will be fine after that!

Our 14 week old Goldendoodle has not been neutered yet. How old was your puppy when you had her/him neutered? How did you decide when to have it done?

Teri, speak to your Vet. Most Vets suggest between 5-6 months. In fact, our Vet actually charged more after 6 months. And, your contract with your Breeder may specify a before date. The old myth" let them go through a heat cycle first " is exactly that... A myth.
