Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Sky's fur is so soft and fluffy. It feels like the best blanket you can imagine! Is she a curly coat? Curly fleece? What's the difference?

Also, do I brush her still? She's not matted at all and the family we got her from said they haven't had her groomed, ever. How long do they have their puppy coats?

Sorry for all the questions, I've never had a puppy!

Here's a close- up picture.

Her coat looks a lot our cockadoodle's.  His coat is like silk with curls and I actually don't brush it.  It almost forms little dreads but not with the knots.  I do trim him around the face and try to trim the body until there comes a point that we take him to the groomer (about every 6 months)

I'm not so good on the official names of the coat types but she looks curly to me.  I have 2 curly doodles.  Webster has large coarse curls, when he was a puppy he was like chenille.  His coat was so thick it was difficult to brush.  Webster does not mat and doesn't "need" to be brushed for matting.

Charlotte is my fine haired tight curly doodle.  Charlotte does mat.

Tessa is my 1 yr old wavy girl.  She is currently going through her coat change and matting like crazy.  I just gave her a short SHORT cut because even though I had been brushing, her mats were close to the skin and I was missing them.

Even if your dog doesn't need brushing for mats, I encourage you to brush her at least once a week.  It is excellent for the dog to have his/her entire body handled during the brushing process.  It will help you see if there are any bumps, cuts, or sore spots.  It will help spot fleas or ticks. Brushing also stimulates the skin and helps the hair and skin be healthier.

I am not very good at regular brushing and that is one reason I keep my dogs' hair short but I still grab the brush for a quick once-over :-)

Sky is such a cutie.  If she doesn't mat, frequent brushing with fancy products and brushes isn't necessary, but you will find that 'stuff' sticks in these fluffy coats and brushing helps you get out those hidden sticks and leaves. . . . :-)

Sky is beautiful :). I'm glad she is settling in a better home where she can get all the attention she needs.

She is beautiful!  I would certainly brush her at least weekly, even if she doesn't mat.  It can't hurt and it's good for her to be handled, plus it's good bonding time!
