Hi all,
I just came home to find Bandit had chewed up a little of my aloe plant. I read it is poisonous to dogs. I have a call in to the vet. Has anyone else had this happen? I don't think he ate it, it looks like he bit it and spit it out.

With anything, a 'call' into the vet is just not fast enough. On DK we have the Danger Group with a list of toxic substances to dogs. Many will amaze you!
I have always used Poison Control. There is also a Animal Control 800 number you can call.
Here is a link to Poison Control for Dogs. I'm still searching for other numbers. Time is Always of the essence with poisoning. Posting on DK is great, but not timely. Hope this helps

Sadly, I noticed this number is no longer free. WTD?

Thanks Joanne.I am waiting for my vet to call me back. I think he bit it and spit it out. Don't think it was a lot. Am keeping my eye on him until I hear from the vet, thanks.
But here is my reasoning for the timely issue.
Say you ate a bad mushroom. You have a 20 minute window to live. That's all. 20 minutes.
If this were the case, by the time a vet would call you back, it is way too late. The Liver is already gone.
So with Children and Dogs, always act fast with poisoning.
Agree, doesn't sound bad, I'm just putting it out there for other situations and newbies too.
I have too much experience with Poison Control and it was they who gave me a stern lecture when I waited once.
When my oldest son was a toddler, PC asked I use a sharpie and write their number on his forehead for easy access in emergencies. LOL He was a challenge. Urinal cakes, Morning Glory flowers, refrigerator, deodorant, house plants, Buckeyes, and yes, he ate a mushroom... among many things. He has a binky until he was four!!! One in each hand and one in his mouth. Most of his poisonings came in the grocery store of all places. As I would reach for an item and he sat in the shopping cart, he would reach for items on the shelves. My house was secure, but it can happen anywhere. He no longer went shopping with me.
So, lessons learned.
Thank you Joanne.
Joanne, when we first got Libby she got into something that we did not know if it was dangerous or not. So we called the Animal Poison hot line here in Fresno and I do not know if it is local or State wide. We told them what she injested and they said and I quote "we cannot give you an answer until we charge a credit card $49.00" My DH was livid! We hung up and realized from that moment on we would call our own vet. I guess we just didn't think of that at first as we were in a panic. I could NOT believe they cannot give that kind of advice unless they get a payment first.
Thanks for your reply and the link. He did not eat the plant, just bit it and spit it out. Maybe he got some of the gel in his mouth and your link says the gel is not toxic.
HomeAgain Pet Rescue that has Quincy's microchip registered has a free poison control number for members. We used it once when my DH had motrin accidentally mixed in with the kibble in his pocket (we think) and they were terrific and free with the membership. http://public.homeagain.com/#
