Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Thanks everyone who joined Adina & I for the live dog training webinar!  A very special thanks to our trainer Doggy Dan for sharing so much good stuff.  Adina is off to put the kids to bed so I'll wrap this up.

What did you think?

Again, thank you!  We know it's not easy to free up an evening on a holiday weekend.  :-)

We're sorry we couldn't address every question you guys asked in chat.  You had some great questions and we just couldn't get to them all.

What I really like about Dan since getting to know him is that NOTHING is off limits.  He doesn't hold anything back and say "You have to subscribe to my website to get that answer."  Nope.  He will give you the best answer he possibly can every time.  And tonight he laid out his method.  As you saw, he is passionate about the transformations that take place in our dogs when WE are the pack leaders.  He has shown that the basis of solving every problem is being the pack leader and the trusting relationship with our dogs that comes from that.

I thought the content was killer.  The production values?  Not so much.  But I really don't care too much that Adina and I were in our garage (really!) and Dan was in his spare bedroom.  This was about answering your questions and giving you as much value as we possibly could.  I think we did that in spades.  Could we cover everything in an hour?  Nope.

And that's why Dan's video site is so helpful.  You can try it out for $1 and watch over 250 videos on all aspects of dog training.  Dan is a full time trainer and has run across most every problem you can imagine.  The best part is he has taped his interaction with these dogs and given us the solution to solve them for ourselves.

So check out his website.  He has given DK members a $1 trial and then $10 off.  This offer is only good until Wednesday night.  Thanks Dan!

I just couldn't get her to be quiet!  You know how she is Laurie...  :-)   My DW loves the research, writing, taking notes... and then the 'telling DH what to say' part of the webinar.

LOL....I always like the "telling DH what to say" part, too :)

I didn't have a chance to see the webinar last night, but thanks for the replay.  I'm definitely going to take a look.

I just watched the webinar and I've had a chance to get through many of the videos on the website.  I really like Doggy Dan....I am in complete agreement with most of his training philosophy and I think his ability to share execution via the "real life" demonstrations is fantastic.  This is very similar to the method that we've used with the trainer we've worked with over the past year or two.  Here are the things that I like best about this trainer's method...

-it's balanced.  The focus is neither about strong corrections nor the ever popular "click and treat" approach.  He uses treats at what I consider to be totally appropriate times....not bribes or lures but rewards for making the right decision.

-I like that he's so calm and his approach recognizes how important that is for the dog as well.  Teaching Murph "calm" has made a huge difference.  It's something that I have to remember and practice every day.  I've also learned that I must be calm myself in order to calm him....that's the most difficult part of all.  Doggy Dan does this so well.

-I LOVE the way he teaches the walk.  It's interesting how quickly the dog can revert back to pulling when you let down on this.  My DH has had both knees replaced over the past six months and so there are times when I'm walking both dogs, in a huge hurry to have them go potty and so I skip the structure part.   Doing that just a couple times gives them the idea that walking is going to be a "free for all", and I have to "reteach"....so not worth it.

-Taking control over the food and when and how affection is given are huge factors in my opinion.  I don't eat over the bowl, but always make them wait calmly while I prepare it and I pick up those dishes the minute they finish.  Affection is always on my terms which is so difficult but I've seen what it does to Murph when he demands attention....not pretty.

-I think his use of time outs is perfect.  I have found that to be incredibly effective....Murph now puts himself in time out when he makes a "mistake".  So funny to watch.

-His video of the dog reactive dog was fantastic.  He was clearly confident and in control.  What I liked the best about it was that it showed that there is no quick and easy method of addressing this.  That dog's state of mind never got calm enough for the dogs to actually meet....but the situation also never got out of control.

-Great recall training direction.  Gotta love a long line.

Anyway I personally think you did a fabulous job of putting this together and selecting this trainer and method.  This proves again that DK provides such great information and resources for raising a healthy, balanced, and well trained Doodle (or any dog).  Thanks so much!

Thanks Jane! I agree with your assessment of Doggy Dan's training completely. Thanks for your review. :-)

It did take a long time for me to find Doggy Dan. I had been looking for an online system for a couple years when I found him. I had found lots of other systems but none really fit with the members of DK: they were book based and not interactive, they required too much precision from the dog owners to do the techniques 'right', the philosophy seemed off, etc.

But since Doggy Dan's course is based on video's it just seemed so much easier to grasp all the concepts and to see exactly how he did it.

Glad you enjoyed it!

I was thinking throughout the seminar that you had said much the same things about Murphy. It seems like your trainer has similar philosophies and training methods.

Wonderful,  Really enjoyed it, learned much and loved Dan.  I wrote down the info and passed it on to my kids who have dogs of different varieties.  Thank you for doing this for us, it was well done and well worth the time.

Breezy and Kate

Thank you so much for organizing this webinar. I learned a lot! Admittedly, it was a little rough in the beginning. However, I kept in mind that this was Doodlekisses first webinar. I was not put off by the tech issues or Dan promoting his website; I've been to many work-related webinars and tech issues and some promotion is common, especially if the webinar is free. I thought that Dan provided a lot of good information and in an engaging way.

I agree with the other folks who found the text chat distracting, and the lack of maturity and respect of at least one Doodlekisses member was overwhelming and embarrassing. (It was like watching a train wreck.) I found myself chiming in a few times because I felt the need to add something positive. As a result, sometimes I missed what Dan was saying. A few members suggested disabling the text chat feature until the end. That's a great idea if it can be done.

Just getting back on today and are starting through the 5 Golden Rules. I have to say that I'm loving Doggy Dan's approach and feel pretty certain we will be subscribing for at least another month to continue getting through the entire site and applying certain situations. I found the feeding one really interesting ... he should have just entitled that section "AnnaBelle". As I mentioned previously there is going to be some tough love that is going to be hard to dish out I've seen already. That little black nose and adorable face can be tough to resist but I must just continue to see it from the dogs view. So many of the things that I love about her I'm learning are her controlling me ... :o(

Jackdoodle wishes to respectfully protest your use of the word "little" in reference to Annabelle's nose. He also wishes to remind you that when it comes to doodle noses, bigger is always better, and Annabelle's is one of the best!

LOL

Tara wants me to ask you to ask Jackdoodle what he thinks of button noses? ;)

JD says, Petite doodle, petite nose. It's like they say in the personal ads, height/weight nose/weight proportionate!
