My chocolate phantom puppy is here and a vet question!

Drove 9 hours round trip yesterday to bring Reese P. Buttercup, our standard labradoodle,  home. She is so sweet and calm, super gentle. We love her so much!

She is 8 weeks and 12.5 lbs. I'm confused about when/what she needs to go the the vet for. She has been dewormed 3x and had two vaccines for parvo/distemper. She was spayed last week. The breeder's paperwork says something about scheduling her for a vet's visit 3 weeks after her last vaccine which was just two days ago. So does she not need to go the the vet for 3 weeks? I thought she'd have to go sooner?

Oh my goodness Reese P is as cute as they come! 

When we got each of doodles, we had to sign a health guarantee with our breeder and one of the conditions was that they have a wellness exam and a fecal within 72 hrs of bringing him home.  We had to return a copy of the veterinary's report to the breeder with 7 days of receiving the puppy.  If we did not do this, our heal guarantee would not be valid.  I think it depends on the breeder because I have heard where others have not  even had a health guarantee.

This is an excellent point, Linda. Many breeders have a similar 3-day clause in their health guarantees.

IMO, it is always a good idea to have a vet look at any new puppy as soon as you get her. Not for shots or any type of testing, just to be sure that everything is as it should be with the pup's health, including teeth, eyes, ears, heart, conformation, etc. 

I took my last puppy to my vet for this the day I picked her up from the breeder. :)

Many vets offer a new puppy exam for a very reasonable price. Mine charges only $35 for this.

I'm sure there are differing opinions on this but I always brought my puppies to the vet within a few days of coming home.  I also brought a stool sample at that visit.  I wanted the puppy to be fully checked and I also wanted to be sure that she didn't come home with parasites.  Many puppies are "dewormed" at the breeders, but still present with parasites, particularly giardia.  Hopefully everything is just fine....but I would want to be sure.  Congratulations...she is a cutie.

Reese is just adorable, I have always scheduled an immediate vet visit to acquaint our vet to the new puppy, get him checked out and let the vet decide when he should have his next shots, etc. Our breeder had a clause in our contract that required us to take the puppy to the vet within 48 hours and we had the appointment set up before we picked him up, sounds a little different in your case but a 'get acquainted' visit wouldn't hurt. So I made an appointment for her tomorrow. Went throught the paperwork and I have five days to take her for a new puppy visit for the health guarantee to be valid. Good thing I checked. Thanks!

Our vet told us to come at 9/12/15 weeks. Call the vet's office and talk to them :) They will know...

And I second the fecal needs to be done to check for parasites... almost every puppy has them, ours did. You want to knock that out ASAP.

Unfortunately, giardia usually has a 10-14 day incubation period, during which it doesn't show up in a fecal, and the breeders have a way of dosing them with worming meds right before they go home, so you sometimes have to have another fecal done anyway 2 weeks later if the start having symptoms.

I would agree, a vet visit, not so much for any Vacs., but for pure piece of mind. Enzo went the following day, after picking her up from the Breeder. Firm believer in, no Vet visit is ever wasted. Your pup is adorable, by the way! Good luck!
