Board and train?

Has anyone here ever done a board and train program for your doodle?

I'm having no luck in teaching Sky not to jump up on us, steal food from the kids or pull on a leash. We have to board her for a week in August anywuss so I'm contemplating a board and train program.

Please give me some opinions!

Don't have any experience in the board and train. Have you taken her to classes yourself yet? I'd do that first since you are the one they "train" anyway ;-)
Aside from that as long as she is there, I'd say sure! Why not, it might be helpful also.
Sky is a doll, I remember your posts about getting her and losing her sister. So nice to see happy doodle stories.

Since you have to board her anyway, it won't hurt, but I doubt it will accomplish that much. I certainly would not do it if I did not have to board.

 

I have been through several obedience courses and they all seem meant for the humans more so than the dogs. It is more strategies of  eliciting desired behavior than actually creating that behavior for you. Even if they were to train your doodle some to recognize a few commands, you still need to know how to elicit that behavior from your dog.

I am aware of some good programs.  They key is that the trainer also works with you so that you can continue to implement the strategies at home.

I agree that it is mainly the human that needs the training but that being said, a board and train might be good and would at least keep her occupied while you are away. It is important though that the trainer uses methods that you approve of with her. There are many different training styles.

We did a board and train program. Our puppy was 12-13 weeks and I was leaving the country for 2 weeks. The program we used when you bought two weeks of boarding, they gave you a class free (they want you to come and work with your dog so they can supervise and teach you) our puppy was already potty trained and was really good at sit, but when we picked her up we were amazed at what they had taught her. We were instructed to allow at least an hour when comkng to pick her up and they gave us a ton of info, taught us what she knew, etc. When we started taking class is when we were taught how to teach her additional things. She was never a destructive puppy, never tried to get our food, always allowed grooming. We just took her to board and train because we were leaving and we didn't want her to spend the night in a kennel, our trainer took her everywhere with her for 2 weeks, she had a crate in her house, went to events, classes, work with her. I have to say it was the best decision we made. We have said multiple times that we will do the same with every dog we have. We have such a great relationship with our trainer and honestly we could've done our CGC back in April/may if we had tried. If I were having issues, the first thing I would do is call a well respected positive reinforcement training program. :)
