Earlier this week, DK member Malenie Piscetelli posted this discussion, Please Read This!!!

Sadly, she closed the discussion for reasons unknown. Which, makes it not a discussion at all but a comment since no one could respond.

So, in rebuttal, and in response to this article, I am posting the other side.

I have no opinions, just putting this out there so people can make informed decisions, do their own research, and openly discuss important issues concerning the health of our dogs.

PROBLEM: because of the facebook scares dog owners are withholding water, cool water, ice from their dogs in this heat!  WTD?

Do not let these myths scare you. Water your dogs, please

Melting away a myth: The truth about dogs and ice water

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — A veterinarian set the record straight to WXMI about whether or not dogs can consume ice water.

Blog posts have recently appeared on some people’s Facebook pages warning people about the so-called dangers.

One post claims the ice water caused a dog to bloat and the animal almost died.

Our sister station in Michigan– WXMI– decided to ask a vet about the post that’s frightening a lot of pet owners.

Dr. Randall Carpenter told WXMI that just consuming cold water or ice cubes in moderation will not cause bloat, saying ice cubes and water when the weather is hot is a good thing.

He said, “Ice cubes and cold water are fine for pets as long as it’s done with some common sense.”

For some reason the video is not showing up. Please use the link above to view Dr ( the vet's interview)

Joanne, the discussion was closed because it is an internet hoax, which has been circulating via email for 7 years, and she couldn't delete it, so she did the next best thing, which was to close it. It was also posted in TFG, where I responded with this same info.

Snopes Article: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/icewater.asp

The problem with these kinds of posts is that people do not read things carefully, they see a title or a picture and become unnecessarily alarmed, and spread the false information on to others. I am so tired of these FB rumors spreading like wildfire thru every forum, frightening pet owners for no reason.

Small amounts of ice and ice water are actually beneficial for dog who are nauseated, but only after resting the stomach and monitoring. When JD is recovering from an IBD flare in which he has not been able to keep anything down, the first thing he is permitted to have after resting the gut for several hours is a small amount of ice water, as per his internist.

Yep I edited my discussion as you were typing, took off her name, but...

Still, the information stays on the front page with no disclaimer!

My concerns were--do not withhold fluids from your dog in the heat!   This is the reason I reposted the issue again!

And you know, many dogs have had no cool water because of this scam, I dont want the same here

I know. That's why it would have been best for the discussion to be deleted, but once someone has responded to a discussion, the O.P. can't delete it. Only Adina can do that. But it should at least have been edited to change the title so it isn't so alarming.

So, maybe we could get her attention and she could edit that discussion?

Have her add--This is a myth. Water your dogs!  That was all I was trying to accomplish.

As it looks now, it perpetuates the rumor all over again

I'll send her a message asking her to change the title.

We are typing over each other but we both have the same ideas at the same time.

We just have too many new owners who.... would read this.  I hate the fact others tell new owners to withhold water for a puppy just for potty training, let alone hot weather. It is a Pet Peeve of mine...

I know. Every time something like this starts up on FB, I get bombarded with PMs and emails from frightened dog owners, too. When somebody somehow started circulating a 3 yr old food recall article on FB, I lost about 2 days of my life.

Thanks Karen for  notifying her. I was at work and posting in between.

I thought of doing that myself but feared those who already read it once, would not go back into the post.

I think, I hope, we got the message across.

Let's have a Drink of Cool Water now and hope we spread the word

LOL, Clink!

Thanks for clarifying. I did not know it was a myth.

Oh i was wondering why the discussion was closed.  I also noticed that one of the dog blogger I follow posted a whole blog today about how ice water is fine and thought it was a coincidence.

I give my dogs cold water and sometimes ice water when its HOT!  They are always fine.  Bender has an issue when i give him actual cubes of ice…he chews and eats it so fast he always throws up but i think thats an issue he has with RUSHING lol.

Thanks Joanne for posting this and thanks Karen for clarifying what happened :)
