Last night we tried having Daisy sleep in our room for the first time. Up until now she has slept in her crate every night but we got her a nice big dog bed (which she likes) and attempted to have her sleep on our floor.

Well, needless to say I had to bring her back to her dog bed like ten times (she kept jumping on our bed) which was understandable...BUT THEN SHE WOKE UP AT 5AM ON THE DOT!!! And she wanted to PLAY!!! When we have her in her crate she won't make a peep until we come and get her so we are able to get a good night's rest.

What do we do!??

Should we keep her crated until she's a bit older?

Maybe have her sleep on her dog bed in the living room instead of our bedroom?

We really want her with us but it was tough to get any sleep with all of her craziness lol!

God love this doodle!!

Baxter has slept in his crate in our room since the first night we got him at 7.5 weeks. Since the second night, he was sleeping through the night with no whining. As others have suggested, if Daisy's crate is not in your bedroom and you have room for it in there, try having Daisy sleep in the crate in your room.

This week, Baxter has started getting restless around 5 a.m. - he's had some minor digestive issues. I let him up to go potty and go back to bed and let him sleep in his crate with the door open until I get up at 6:00 a.m. After he goes potty, he curls up an sleeps for another hour. I try not to make it a production when I first let him out if it's early. I just let him out, wait until he does his business, walk back to the bedroom and get into bed. I don't speak to him or pay much attention to him. I know it might seem cruel, but he gets plenty of attention when we are awake and minimal interaction keeps him in his sleepy mode and everyone is happy.

So funny! Hoka's been in our room for quite a while. When I'm tired,I've started banishing him and Moxie downstairs gated in the back room so I can get some solid sleep. He sleeps like Sid the Sloth from Ice Age: takes up the whole bed and moves around!

Hahah Daisy does the sameeee thing, her favorite place is sprawled out over our pillows, she takes up so much space and we have a king size bed!

Thank you all for your input!! Last night we went back to the crate, she was perfectly fine, didn't make a sound and I got to sleep in until 6:15 lol. We will maybe wait to try this again until summer when I am out of school and can afford to be kept up all night!!!!

I had my 4 month old pup sleep in his crate in my room next to my bed for the first 3 weeks.  I transitioned with leaving his crate door open but he chose not to sleep in it so I removed his crate and left him to roam at night which he started waking up early and playing and peeing everywhere.  SO... I got a baby gate and confined him to my room at night (i live in a loft)and he now sleeps under the bed or on the sheep rug I have.  We've been doing this for the past couple of weeks with great success.  I also walk him (long walk) before bed  because it's cooler , tire him out and he seems to sleep as long as I do. (he's 5 months now)

I chose not to have him sleep in my bed because the research I've done suggests that a lot of dominant behaviors stem from having the puppy sleep on the same and more comfortable level as the alphas.  I'm super petite and really want to get my 50+ future dog to understand his place in the pack for fear of not being able to control him when he gets full grown.  I suspect after his first year I'll permit him more freedom but according to Sophia Yen (the perfect puppy in 7 days)it's good practice to not permit puppies on furniture until they understand their place in the pack.

I agree Leann, my dogs have always slept in crates in my room.... has always worked fine..... I may even be in my room changing sheets, folding laundry, etc, they have always just layed in their crates with doors opened and watched...but at night, they know door closes and it is bed time..... if I left any of them out at night, mischief would be afoot.... I don't care how old they were.

Gibbs is 9 months old and we had him sleeping in our room as a puppy and just moved him within the last two weeks to the "dog room". We have 3 Westies and the Westie's all bunk together and switch beds all night long. Gibbs is still sleeping in his crate and now starts barking and pitching a fit around 6:00 a.m. He doesn't want to go outside, he wants to come and get in bed with us. He's never slept with us, and don't understand why he now won't sleep past 6:00 in his crate. Dogs do some of the strangest things, he's a good dog, but we would really like him to sleep in.
