It is an interesting article for discussion; unfortunately, I fear that many people are going to focus on the "doodle hate, designer dog" stuff and miss the larger message about ethics,self-identification, and the disagreement that these things produce in general. I hope I'm wrong. If I see one more person "defend" the breeding of mixes with the mistaken belief that all recognized dog breeds were created by someone mixing two existing breeds, I might just scream. :)

'like' although I think the tone of debate here on DK should be of a much higher level :)

Very interesting indeed. I wonder why he didn't mention that all recognized dog breeds were created by someone mixing two existing breeds? Somewhere in the Midwest, I think I hear a scream :) LOL Thanks for sharing, Nicky.

teehee ;-)

LOL!!!

Good article to post, Nicky. Deliberate mix created by someone    . . . .   Uh, I think I hear another scream from Karen.....

:-}

We're all existing dogs from mixing two breeds? ;-)

Leslie, there can be more than two breeds in the background of pure breed dogs.  The people who worked on the creation of a new breed, kept careful notes on what they did and  what the result of the breeding was and then they worked to improve the deficit areas.  This happens over a long period of time.

Ah, don't fret it!  We all handle it in our own way.  I have had many dogs and doodles are the best.  I just tell people that if they want to get dogs that are bred for specific uses or if they want a certain look, they just need to make sure all PETS are neutered or spayed.  Yes, you can definitely get a MUTT at the shelter but if you want a great dog, you can also buy a mixed-breed dog (or a pure breed) from a reputable breeder.  It totally matters what you want.  Don't rush into getting a dog and make sure you know what you want.  Problem solved.  Many people argue that why would you buy an expensive dog when you can save the life of a great dog from the shelter.  Answer for that is because that is what you want to do.  It is totally up to you so don't let anyone guilt you.

The author of this article is a member here on Doodlekisses. He posted about his new puppy in Puppy Madness not too long ago!

This is my favorite part...."For Connolly, the solution is to accept that conflict is inevitable, but to cultivate generosity, and try to understand that our own beliefs are contestable, and not beyond reproach. Such generosity is hard to find in the midst of our many internet wars. If you ever lose patience, perhaps you could take a break and walk your dog."  I'm going to try to remember this....whenever I read something online that makes me crazy, I'm going to log out and walk my Doodles.

Thanks for sharing, Nicky!
