Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

I've been feeding the boyz Acana Duck & Pear for going on three years now, for no other reason than that my Bloody Picky Hound actually likes it and there aren't many kibbles that he really likes enough to ... ya know ... eat. Yes, I know he'll eat whatever I give him if he gets hungry enough, but it is nice to know that he likes what he's getting. Well, that and I do like knowing that the boyz are getting their nosh from one of the best pet food companies out there. So imagine my unhappy surprise when I stopped by the little pet supply shop that gets most of my paycheck to be told "Ummm, you need to know that we may be having trouble getting your food for a while."

She proceeded to explain that with the formula change for all of their singles foods (oats/potatoes to legumes) is causing a problem in the US and particularly in Washington state. (She wasn't certain about other states.) Apparently Washington has labeling laws that are preventing Champion from shipping these foods to our state? She tells me that there's one formula, I don't remember which (because my brain was screaming "Noooooooo!") that she's been trying for over a year to get back in stock.

I checked the major online pet food sources before writing this and most of them (Wag, PetFoodDirect, PetFlow) are out of stock. The only one listing the Acana Duck as in-stock right now is Chewy.

Believe it or not I'm actually getting to questions here, LOL. Does anyone else have any information about this? Should I be planning to switch foods? Fussy-Britches does like some of the Fromm formulas, so I could make a change now or wait and see how this falls out. Any ideas/opinions, gang? Karen?

Thanks for the help! ...once again haha

Severely sensitive here and have been for years.  No stomach issues such as IBH, but he does not tolerate much of anything.  You will notice with this food-Grasslands your dog will eat a lot less than the other Acana products.. No worries.  May I add some really great poo too.

Awesome haha! I will have to keep Grasslands in mind for the future. I just started her on Singles a month ago so I'm glad I won't have to switch her again so soon.

What foods (specific formulas) did she have problems with in the past?

Honestly, I would see if you can get the Lamb & Apple formula somewhere else, rather than switch her, especially if she has a sensitive stomach. Maybe order it on-line?

She was on Blue Buffalo puppy when her problems first started but I honestly think she had gotten into something and then the doc prescribed metro (and didn't tell me about the need for a probiotic with that - learned that piece of info from you) and then she had trouble for a couple months until we started probiotics. I had switched her to Orijen puppy in the middle of all of that and she did well on that. I just recently switched her to Acana Lamb & Apple since she is approaching her first birthday. I don't think any of the actual foods gave her problems but I notice she has issues if we give her certain people food even if its a small amount. The transitions are always a little rocky too. All of this may be totally normal but I grew up with 2 shihtzus who could eat anything and everything and never ever had a single stomach problem - so I'm new to this!

All these digestive problems are not "normal"; healthy puppies should have healthy digestive systems. My last dog, a miniature poodle, also had a cast iron stomach and never had digestive issues.

But the metronidazole can cause all sorts of ongoing problems, especially without probiotics.

Is there anything I can do besides the daily probiotic that would combat the ongoing effects of metro? She is totally fine right now but I just wonder how much damage was done since the vet had us do 2 rounds of it...

Probiotics are what you need, and really all you need, as long as it's a good one with at least 5 billion live cultures per serving. JD takes one that has been clinically shown to reduce the need for drugs in humans with serious digestive diseases, it's that powerful. It contains 225 billion live cultures per serving.
