Recently I was digging through my book collection looking for something that I might read to my mother. She is in a nursing home, and has very little interest in most things anymore. She does enjoy me visiting with her, but conversation is quite one sided. That is when I got the bright idea, that maybe I could read to her.
However, what would be appropriate to read to an 82 year old woman with dementia? I started looking for my books about animals. I have read many through the years, but locating them might prove to be a challenge.
First, I found "Dewey". A sweet story about a kitten. He was found in a library book drop box, and ended up growing up in that library, where he remained his entire life.
Then I found "OOGY". If you like animal/dog stories, this one is heart warming too. Oogy was a facially disfigured dog, that was adopted by a loving family, after being rescued. His previous owners used him as pit bull bait, for fighting, thus causing his disfigurement.
The last book I found was "A Big Little Life" by Dean Koontz. It is about his pet dog Trixie. It was kind of hard to think that one of the kings of writing horror and macabre books, could write a such a sweet story about his pet dog.
So that is it. If you are looking for something nice to read, something that is not going to make you clench your jaw while you read it. Pick one of these heart warming animal tales.
