Curious.  If you get your male neutered before he starts hiking to urinate will he continue to squat?            Thanks!

Hi Jenny- my Oliver is 1 yr old he was neutered @ 5 months- he still squats.  My daughter has a 4 yr old who was neutered @ 2 months and squats.  I think the leg lifting has more to do with marking than urination- just my 2 cents.

Thanks!  I really wants Sulley to continue to squat!!!

My pup has not hiked before or after being neutered. He's a year old (-9 days) and he was neutered at 6 months. He hasn't really been around other male dogs who do hike (except for maybe twice) so he really hasn't been exposed to that behavior. Hope this helps : )
Hiking of the leg is a marking gesture. My older Golden would squat in the backyard...but once we went out of the yard he lifted his leg to mark his territory. The age you have them nuetered has nothing to do with their lifting of the leg. Most pups don't luft there leg until after a year or so. Some earlier, some later..in other words, when they feel the need, they'll lift. And I've never heard of anyone stopping this gesture. Just as a FYI...some females will lift their leg as well. I had one who had to lift her leg and cover over all the other dogs pee. She was most definitely the Alpha of the group.

I concur. Mu non-doodle boy was neutered at 5 months and squatted until about 14 months old, and then started hiking.

Stew mostly squats. He's almost a year and was neutered at 6 months. He'll lift his leg maybe once on a walk if he sniffs a patch of grass where other dogs have been, to mark it. But when he has to relieve himself, he squats.

Thanks for the encouraging replies!  I am so glad to know that the age of neutering does not affect squat vs, hike!!

Actually- I've heard that neutering before sexual maturity does lessen marking, and that neutering before 8 months lessens aggression

Ned squatted until he was at least 4 and even now he barely lifts a leg when peeing.   Our Springer is 10 and he still squats.  Both will pee on top of another dog's pee - Gordie rarely though, but neither marks territory. Ned was neutered at 5 months and Gordie at 6 months.
