Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum

Hi All- I'm new. I joined this group because I'd like some feedback. We got our 2nd "standard goldendoodle" last Saturday. She has papers and is AKC registered. Unlike my other gd, the new puppy was at a puppy store. My kids had roped me into walking through to see the puppies and I spotted this pup. She looked very unhappy. I played with her a bit and saw she had a cough and I could feel her ribs. She was 16 weeks that day. It was obvious she was sick. I talked to the owner and we worked out an agreement for her adoption and medical care- which she was not receiving and probably should have been. I brought her straight to the vet and she was only 10 pounds. My older gd was around 30- 35 pounds when he was that age. Granted he's going to be very large (currently 74 pounds at 10 months old), I am surprised just how petite my new one is. Her parents were: mom- golden retriever 62 lbs, dad- standard poodle 56 lbs.

Anyway, it was discovered that my new pup, we named her Daphne, had kennel cough, upper respiratory infection, intestinal parasites, and was not resting enough because of all the puppy play in her shared pen at the puppy store. I'm thinking this all plays into why she's so little for a standard. I don't mind if she is going to be petite, but I would hate for her stunted growth to be long term.
Today is one week later. She's been on lots of meds and is much livelier. She has a great appetite and is now 11 pounds.

Thank you for the kind words, Mari!

I rescued my first doodle at 10 months (she is now almost 2) and then this past April wandered into a pet store on the way home from eating lunch with my husband (just to look)  and low and behold we walked out with a 12-week old jet black Berne Doodle.  I do not advocate those puppy mills whatsoever, but when you see those little faces in those cages it literally breaks your heart, you really have to be ready for whatever could happen when you buy a dog from a pet store, Sophie had the bacteria giardia, (which the pet store paid for the treatment) she is now 7 months old and I can't imagine not having her in our lives, two very young doodles are challenging, but I still feel like I rescued this little doll baby even though I paid money for her, I do not know the care these pet stores give these dogs, I just saw that little face looking up at me and I swore I could hear her say........PLEASE PLEASE take me away from here...........yea I'm a sucker, but a happy sucker.......I just pray for her health every day!!!

You DID rescue her. What's a 10 month old puppy doing in a cage in a pet store. You knew you were in for additional and unknown challenges and you paid her bail anyway. Good for you.
