I am switching my goldendoodle from purina pro plan to orijen. Has anyone made this transition successfully? I am looking for any advice regarding how to pace this transition to avoid tummy troubles :)

Not from Pro Plan but the ratio's should be the same. I followed the guidelines in this food group. I don't have time now to search the post but day 1 was 80% old food and 20% new. It's spaced over a week and my Doodle did wonderfully and has been on the Orijen for 4 months.

Thanks!

How old is he, what does he weigh, and which Purina Pro Plan formula is he eating?

He is 10 months, 48 lbs, and is eating the puppy chicken and rice (my vet said to switch him to an adult formula when I switch his food).

I'm so glad you're getting him off of this dreadful food. One of the only foods that still contains menadione (synthetic vitamin K). Plus by-products, corn, and lots of garbage-y fillers

Orijen contains almost 100 calories per cup more than the Purina, so you can't just replace a portion of the Purina with an equal portion of the Orijen. You feed a lot less Orijen than the Purina. Plus, the two foods are so extremely different that mixing them isn't really going to give you the benefits of the Orijen.

If Remi has no digestive issues, at his age I personally would try switching cold turkey.

If you're afraid to do that, I would definitely not take more than 4 or 5 days to transition.

You'll need to figure out what a quarter of a day's worth of Orijen would be and divide that into two portions, one for each of his meals. (Assuming he's fed twice a day, which he should be).

Then replace one quarter of the amount of Purina you normally feed him at each meal with a portion of Orijen.

After a day or so, do the same thing with 50% of a day's worth of Orijen; then 75% Orijen and 25% Purina, and then 100% Orijen. But in each case, remember that you can't replace an equal amount of one food with an equal amount of the other. Does this make sense?

That makes perfect sense-thank you for the detailed response. I too am excited to get Remi on a higher quality food!

Karen helped me tremendously with making the switch for my pup from his original food over to Orijen. I was transitioning is food over but I did it over a period of 2-3 weeks and I found that his stool was consistently loose.. so I went cold turkey. His stools have been much firmer!! So glad you're making the switch! Goodluck :)

Thanks for all your help! Remi did great with the transition-no diarrhea, and he LOVES his orijen :)

I'm so glad! Thank you for updating us!

Good for you for getting Remi on to the best food out there!  Both my doodles are on Orijen and love it too!!
