I'm slightly worried about Charlie's poo. The first time he goes in the morning it's normal - brown and keeps its form, I'm able to pick it up without it leaving any marks on the grass. The second and/or third poop he does, usually before 12pm while we are on a walk, is much softer. Sometimes it's just liquid but I'm noticing that it looks yellow and has mucus in it? Like a jelly looking type of liquid. Then after lunch and dinner it's normal again. If we take him for an evening walk, the second or third poop is really soft again.

His eating habits are completely normal, he drinks a lot of water and I have not changed his treats. He gets peanut butter with his proviable but that's all - no extra treats or snacks or food. He eats grass when he's outside playing and I try to stop him so maybe it's that? I'm not sure. Also, he's always been a fairly gassy dog and I don't notice anything abnormal with his gas habits lol.

Should I be concerned? Oh and he's almost 7 months.

Hi Nikki, I personally don't think there is anything too worry about. Hunter my doodle who just turned 7 months he does this lots of times. I make his diet and I do know that peanut butter makes his poop softer than when he doesn't have it. I know usually in the mornings his poop is solid then when we walk him and he poops again it is usually much softer just like what Charlie is. I asked my vet and was told it was nothing to worry about, if he was doing this constantly then yes I would have him checked but my feelings are it is normal. Charlie is a real cutie.

I had a similar issue with Yuna! I noticed her eating a lot of the grass on a particularly rainy day and then having liquid/mucus-y poops. When I took her to the vet, they found she had swallowed the parasite Giardia in the water standing with the soil. It was a pretty easy fix to get rid of it but now I am very wary of her chewing on grass in case she picks it up again.

Since he has other poops that are normal, I don't know. Maybe something to talk to the vet about? I'm sure he's fine!

Some mucus is okay. It helps moist the poo for coming down. If it is more and more or with blood I would check to see with vet. Leo has some too and he is almost 6months. Talk with vet if you think it is something more :)
When we first got our puppy she has months of intermittently soft stools. Initially she was treAted for a positive giardia but her soft stools continued. It would alternate between normal formed and then this liquidy stool. Another test revealed persistent giardia and this time we treated with two antibiotics. After this treatment course her stools have been completely normal all of the time--this has been for the last 6-7 weeks. We also noticed that her appetite improved after the treaemt. I would consider getting tested for giardia.
You might like to post this in the Health Group, too! Best,

Post this in the Food Group as well!

I have gone through the same concern with Yarrow & Shiloh. I've pretty much figured out a system to almost completely be done with the stuff I can't pick up. I take them out first thing and they have a normal poo. Then we come in for breakfast. After they have their breakfast I used to take them out for about an hour, but now we have a quiet time for about 45 minutes... to digest their food! It has made a huge difference. They are fed dinner with the same space of relative inactivity just before and for nearly an hour after eating.

Unfortunately Charlie only poo's after breakfast! Never before. As soon as he eats his breakfast he immediately goes to the bathroom. THanks for the reply!! I'm glad you figured it out for your dogs!!
