Sleeping through the night

So our puppy, Angus, is 14 weeks now...we've had him for about 3 weeks. At this point he is consistently waking up around 4/4:30am and starts whining to go out. Any ideas when we might expect him to sleep through the night? Last night he did sleep 7 hours, but sadly fell asleep super early after a very busy Sunday evening. Just wondering when we might expect to get some solid and consistent sleep ;)

Dexter is 16 weeks today. I take his water away 3 hours before bed. I will sometimes give him an ice cube or two if he goes looking for his water. He is put in his crate anywhere from 10:30-11:00. Once he sees me start turning off lights he knows it is potty time then bed time. On weekdays I take him out a little after 7:30 and on weekends it is 8:30. On weekdays I make a point to do a little bit in the kitchen first like get my son his bowl of cereal so he gets used to me not running to get him first. When he was younger I just kept extending the time, but I would say he has been on this schedule for at least a month now.

That is good to know. We do take the water away around 8pm and normally he goes up with us to get ready for bed around 10ish and is in the crate by 10:30. He seems to be getting up slightly later each day, but definitely has to potty when we take him out around 4:30. He seems to be sleeping longer and longer, so we're really hoping he's close to sleeping soundly through the night... we are pretty exhausted over here!

Every puppy is different. Some will sleep through the night right off, others ,it takes time and patience. We were lucky enough to have Enzo sleep through the night first night home @ 8 weeks. We did pick up any water around 7ish. She'd be in her crate by 10:30 or so and get up with me at 6. If she did happen to wake and whine in the middle of the night, I sshhh'd her and calmed her. She'd go back to sleep and no wet crate in the AM.
Picking up his water a bit earlier and letting him whine just a bit, should he wake up, may be your answer. Worth a shot! ;)

Oh man that's pretty awesome. We'll definitely try letting him whine for a bit longer...it usually gives us an extra hour, but not always. We'll pull his water up earlier too. Thanks for the tips!

We have the same problem over at our house! We have had Amos (19 weeks) for 5 weeks now, and the past two weeks he is quiet in his kennel until 5/5:30am. We take his water away at 7pm and he is in bed by 10pm. He has improved from whining every 1-3 hours every night.  Now, I can't wait for him to sleep just one hour longer!  It's a good thing they are cute, huh!?

Hahah...yes the cuteness helps us put up with some of the puppy crazies for sure! I think we're going to try slowly leaving him in longer and longer. Gotta try to keep him up a little later tonight...9:30 was too early for him, but paying a visit to his grandma and grandpa really pooped him out!

Dont worry, the first month or so are tough, like a newborn baby in his/her first year.  Doodles are so smart and they learn fast.  Once they really bond with you, they like to copy their routine as I've found with my aussiedoodle.  She relaxes when I relax and she sleeps when I sleep and she stays in bed until late when I do.  We had problems with whining in the crate and waking up early but after a few months, all good.  I also make sure to give my little girl plenty of exercise so she is pooped by the nighttime. She's dying to sleep but she won't relax until we stop moving around to relax.  We stopped crating around 9 months but we left the crate for her as an option, now at a year and a half, she more than sleeps through the night and voluntarily goes in her crate when she needs her own space and get tired of sleeping on our bed.  She also takes herself to bed when she is really tired.  They keep changing and changing and getting easier and easier with each month

Oh that's awesome! I'm looking forward to that...we are noticing that our little guy is a fast learner, but just wanted a little help seeing the "light" at the end of the puppy tunnel haha. We are looking forward to when we can take our guy hiking and to the dog park and to socialize more with other pups to help with the crazy puppy energy. He's a busy little man!

As Rosemary said, every pup is different, but I can tell you that Yarrow started sleeping through the night at about 5 months. The first few months are the worst in terms of sleep deprivation and exhaustion. Yarrow is almost 14 months old now and that all seems so very long ago. (Thank goodness because we now also have Yarrow's sister, Shiloh, to love and raise.)

Yes seems like there's quite a range...I think we're getting close based on Angus' sleeping patterns. Plus it's getting easier to get up at 4am to take him out and then pop him back in the crate haha...I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing lol
