My ALD is 7 months old and I just noticed a fairly large "hot spot" on his neck - he has been scratching there for a few days and now I see a red open irritated area on his neck about the size of a nickel and when I try and look at it - he really fights me - I can tell that it is uncomfortable for him when I try to touch that area.  I have made an appointment with his vet but he can't get in to see her for 3 more days so was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what they did.  Thanks for the help.

Wow, three days?

I have no ideas for you but certainly sounds like he needs medical attention.  Others should chime in with suggestions or what helped their dog when they had hot spots.

Hope he is feeling better soon. Poor guy sounds like he is in pain

I'd find a vet who can see him NOW. IMO, you need a new vet anyway if yours can't make time for an emergency situation. Hot spots cause a lot of discomfort and need treatment, otherwise they just get bigger and can become infected.

Agreed, Karen, he needs to see his vet now, not in three days.

I think 3 days is too long. He is uncomfortable and needs to be seen sooner. I would call a different vet or call your vet and insist he be seen asap. Good luck!

Yep, you will find out more about your vet from this experience.  You may need to start shopping.

Wash with a surgical scrub, apply fucidine cream.

We suffer the same thing, just keep an eye on it.... When it's real bad it'll be about the size of the palm of your hand

Thank you everyone for your concerns and thoughts - unfortunately my(Maxwell's) vet is away from her office until Thursday morning and they did fit me in the morning she returns - and I really would rather he see his own vet than another vet so I will be waiting until his Thursday morning appt.  The spot is not any worse than it has been and it is not getting any bigger - actually some of his fur has seemed to have grown over it now and it feels a bit scabby -  if it had gotten worse I would have definitely taken him to see any vet asap but I am continuing to watch it and so far no change - he still scratches at it quite a bit though so I am trying to keep him from doing that.  I feel very confident with my(Maxwell's) vet as I had a dog prior to Maxwell for 14 years and she was an amazing vet and I want a proper diagnosis which I believe she will be able to make as well.  I will keep you posted as to what she says and what treatment she advises.  Thanks again for all you concerns - much appreciated!  Maxwell will be okay - I would never allow my dog to be in any medical trouble but my gut instinct is he will be fine until Thursday morning - if anything changes for sure I will get him in somewhere asap.
