Labradoodle & Goldendoodle Forum
Good morning! I thought I'd share a cute story with you all because nobody else gets me and my infatuation with this doodle!
We've had Dags for 2.5 weeks now and potty training hasn't been great - just in that she doesn't tell us when she has to go out and her hints are very subtle. She's no longer afraid of the bells - breakthrough! But she still doesn't use them for potty purposes.
Anyway, here's the cute story:
We have an indoor/outdoor cat. Dagny and the cat (Ninja) are becoming fast friends. Whenever the cat is ready to come in from outside he sits on the porch and peeks through the door's sidelights until someone opens the door. Well, whenever Ninja comes back to the house, Dagny sits on the other side of the door staring at him through the window. I need to get a picture of them nose to nose through the glass! Well, two days ago, Dagny started ringing the bells to notify us that the cat was back home and that we need to open the door. She's done it three times now!! I immediately take her outside to potty when she's rung the bells, but I'm certain she's doing it more so to let her precious kitty in vs. letting us know she has to go potty. This baby girl makes me laugh all day long!
Thanks for letting me share :)

Teresea, your story made me smile! How adorable that Dagny wants her kitty to be safe and warm inside the house! Be sure to share the picture of them nose to nose when you capture it!
I will Gail! Maybe today will be the day ;)
Smart pup or maybe smart trainer kitty?
Yes, so smart they make me feel inferior! LOL
I love this story.....it's amazing how they can learn to get us to do what they want.
They are so danged smart!!!! Kona did extremely well with the potty bell from the first day, and seemed to understand it was for potty. But a few months later he was ringing it loudly when I was in the other room. I came to find him standing there with one of my bras in his mouth asking permission to take it outside to destroy. (I said no). He taught his adopted sister a year later how to use it within one hour of her living with us, but since she was already potty trained, she immediately viewed it as a "door opening" device, and I would find her with the strangest objects in her mouth that she wanted to go bury or eat outside. (Once it was a completely frozen 1/2 pound block of butter she managed to reach at the back of my counter).
I'll be curious to see what Dagny teaches you next with the bell! Maybe she'll start informing you when the mail has arrived!
Too cute! It's true that I'm the one being trained!
Breakthrough #2! Just now, went into her kennel and laid down for the first time ALL BY HERSELF!! My baby is growing up ;)
Awww!!!! My heart and face are smiling for you! You even have the exact same crate that I used for Kona. He LOVED his crate because it was a nice dark cozy hiding place for him. I put a huge fake fur rug over it to make it dark for him during the day and he started going in on his own a lot after I did that.
Thanks Gwyndolyn! That's a great idea :) I bet she would like that so much better. She does have a hard time getting her rest in during the day. The dark kennel may help!
He loved that big fake fur rug for 2 reasons....It provided coziness for his naps inside the crate, and the extra on the side provided coziness while he watched me cook. To this day (2 years later), he still sleeps on the rug but under the dining room window, and he still lies on another thick cozy bed in the kitchen where his crate used to be to watch me cook every day.
And you can see that he even liked me to put a blankie on his portable crate in the living room and he would go in there for naps. The metal crate has long since been folded up in the garage, and the blue portable crate (for trips in the car) sits in the dining room and he and his adopted sister often fight over who gets to tuck away in there while we eat. Many times, both of them lie down in there at the same time. I finally gave in and quit traveling with two crates because they love the coziness of curling up together in the blue crate for trips in the car to the dog park. (Kona is a large miniature Double Doodle at 27 pounds, and Maggie is a small 30 pound Briard Sheepdog American Eskimo mix. Perfect match for playing)
Gwydolyn! How did I miss this post?! How lovely!! Thanks for sharing your wonderful doods with me!
