I got a choice to pick between two puppies who had very different personalities. One is adventurous and playful while the other was sweet and cautious. I picked the sweet calm puppy and the breeder said that he just needed reassurance in new situations.
I've heard that a shy puppy could grow into a fearful aggressive dog? I plan on early socialization but was curious to hear everyone's thoughts.
Here is the video link that has both puppies and you can clearly see the difference in there personalities.

It's hard to say.  When Rosco's littermates were born, I wanted a cream female.  But it was a choice between a very shy pup (who I never met) or a very high energy pup. So...I switched gears entirely and chose the red male that tested well for the right temperament I wanted.  I'm guessing your breeder didn't do any temperament testing officially?  I liked looking over the testing to see how the pup responded to each part of the test.  I personally prefer to avoid shy dogs.   But I know some shy dogs make great companions.  It just wasn't what I wanted.

Have you actually met the pup?  If so, how was your interaction?

Hi Adina, I live 6 hrs away from the breeder and wasnt able to go for puppy selection day. I talked to the breeder and she made a video of them at my request to help me decide. I shared the link.
She didn't do any temperament testing to my knowledge. I just felt a connection to the cream puppy from the moment I saw his picture and she said he is very sweet.

Sweet is a great personality trait. He didn't appear to be cowering or trying to 'get away' just not as curious or playful as the other pup.

We ended up picking the puppy that had more curiosity about his environment, was more interested in meeting us and our other dogs, and simply charmed us.  I like calm but we wanted a dog that we could take camping with us and would not be fearful in new situations. So, I guess of the two you have a choice between I would choose the livelier one, however, like Adina, I would like to know how he did in other tested areas. This might not be reflective of his total personality,

I hope I made the right decision going with the more calm puppy. I've always wanted a sweet and calm dog but am afraid that could mean they wouldn't be friendly with others. I wish I could have interacted with them but will have to just wait till the end of the month to meet our puppy when we pick him up.

The calm pup didn't appear fearful, just quieter and perhaps more of a watcher.  I am sure you picked the perfect one for you.  I can't wait until you get it and post more pictures.  Good luck!

Thank you. I'm so excited! The end of the month couldn't come any sooner :)

For what it's worth, my Rosco had ZERO interest in me when I went to pick him up.  He was more intent on jumping on his mom and hanging off her with his teeth.  Whereas his mom couldn't care less because Clark and I were throwing a ball for her.  So it kind of worried me that my new pup was NOWHERE near as excited to meet me as I was to meet him.  But we grew on each other ;-)

I would have picked the same puppy you did. Orwell had a sister like the other pup and she annoyed me... and possibly him too because he was trying to cuddle with me but couldn't mainly because of her.

As other's have said, he doesn't look afraid per se, just checking things out from afar. Orwell did this as a young puppy, but is more confident now with good socialization. Their personalities do change a bit and he will liven up and want to play-- trust me.

By the way, he is adorable. I can't wait to see more pictures/videos.

Thank you, it's reassuring to hear that :) I'm a very calm and patient person and was prepared for any puppy personality but always wanted more of a relaxed cuddle buddy.
I just fell in love with him from the first picture I saw of him and was so happy when he was still available to pick when it was my turn...it felt meant to be :)

Always go with your gut on matters like these. (:
