We took Bella to the groomers and while there ask the vet techs (groomer is located at our vet's office) to check on Bella's Micro-chip just to make sure it wasn't moving around. They couldn't locate the chip. Our vet asked us to bring Bella back and he would do the scan because "we know it's there". Well guess what? The chip seems to have just disappeared. Actually, what they think may have happened is either 1) When the chip was put in it came right back out the same hole and was stuck on her skin under all that doodle fur and later fell off or 2) It is somehow a defective chip. Our vet had never seen this happen before - traveling chips, yes - disappearing chips, No. So now Bella has a new chip (at no cost to us, naturally) and from now on at each and every vet/grooming visit I'm having it checked. Rozee's chip was immediately located exactly were it should have been. Very Strange. Anyone ever hear of such a thing happening?
When I had Murphy's checked last November just before we were to travel they couldn't find a chip. I was wondering if it was their scanning equipment that was faulty. I had forgotten all about it but after reading this post I think I should have him checked again.

Yes, we did check the tail - in fact every inch of her entire body at least 5-6 times. We did think about not having her re-chipped, however, Bella is our Addison's dog and getting her daily meds and monthly injections keeps her alive so we feel we have to do whatever it takes - and should she ever get lost we must make sure we've done everything possible to get her the medical attention she needs. Collars and medical tags can/do come off - but I've just learned chips can also fail.
We had Katie microchipped while she was being spayed and under anesthesia. When we returned to have her sutures removed I asked that they confirm the placement of the microchip. Like Bella, they could not find the chip. Another microchip was inserted and a confirmed reading was now detected. Of course we heard that this is the first time this has ever happened. My advise is to have the microchip read at your next vet visit. It takes only seconds to verify. You definitely don't want your missing doodle lost with an inactive microchip.
I am wondering what brand of chip was involved in these situations...maybe there is a common denominator? Jackdoodle was microchipped at the shelter, he has an Avid chip. I know there are other brands & systems; Almost Home, etc. What company were Bella's, Katie's, Sherlock's & Murphy's chips from?
Abby's moved chip is close to the middle of her back. We haven't had Molly's checked yet, this is a good reminder to get it checked. They both have Home Again chips.
Katie is microchiped with the resQ pet tracking system. She is now identified by both the missing chip and her new chip identification numbers. I really don't think the chips are at fault but rather the ability of the microchip to follow the blood path when the installation tool is removed. I was told not to disturb the insertion area for at least 24 hours giving the chip time to embed itself into the surrounding tissue.
