Anyone have a pup that pees in crate?

Lucky has peed in his crate several times. We thought maybe it was a bit too big, so we moved the divider to make it even smaller (but he can still lie down). But he has still peed in it. This morning for example I got up to take him out and discovered he had peed all in it. He hadn't made a peep all night. It didn't seem to bother him at all! We keep cleaning with enzymatic cleaner, and we take him out and praise when he goes potty outside, etc. We've had him for just over a week, and he is 9 weeks old.

Any thought or tips?

I think your answer is that he is 9 weeks old. And you've gotten a pup who is either accustomed to peeing where he sleeps or just plain does not care. The good news he is very young and with continued vigilance of getting him out every hr or so....and not wait for him to alert you, he will eventually house train. I never did get up at night with Enzo, but this may show that you will have to. Maybe set your alarm for a few hrs after you go to bed. That and picking up water a few hrs before bedtime, may help.

Thanks. We pick up his water at 7 pm. I haven't ever had a pup before that didn't cry or fuss if he peed in the crate so this is new! I'll set my alarm tonight. :)

BTW I had "Enzo" on our list of potential puppy names. :)

I always swore I'd name my next dog Dyson....after years of raising Golden Retrievers.
All my animals are named after cars in some shape or form. DH is a huge car nut and our " deal" was, if he gets a new vehicle, I get a another animal. Enzo came along right after I read the book " The Art of Racing in the Rain", as it is narrarated by a dog named Enzo. and he bought a Ferrari...so it just seemed to fit. Except for the fact that our Enzo is a girl.

Our puppy does not pee in his crate, but he thinks his bed that we have in our family room is the place to pee. I am washing it now for the third time. I have decided I am just not going to leave it out anymore. I  have no idea why he thinks it's okay to pee there. I have soaked it in enzymatic cleaner, no luck. Too bad because it's a nice cushy bed. I think it's actually karma. We saw the bed in one store for a high price. We went to the same store in a different location and the same bed had no price tag. The sales person marked the bed with a price that was $30 cheaper than the other store (she was going on her lunch break and did not want to be bothered researching the correct price.) We didn't say anything. Instead we bought the bed and high tailed it out of the store. I guess that's what we get. :-)

We had issues with Harley peeing in the crate at first (he was 10 weeks when we got him). We set him on a schedule and if he had been out of the crate playing, after 30 minutes we took him out to pee. I even woke him up to take him out again before I would go to bed at night. We'd wake up, and he would've peed in the crate. It was very frustrating, because he didn't seem to care and would not alert us during the night that he needed to go. So we moved to the method of feeding him in the crate, under the theory that they won't pee, etc where they eat. This seemed to make the process go faster because not long after that he started whining during the night to go out. We still had a few accidents, but nothing like the never ending ones we had before we started feeding him in the crate! Good luck! It will get better!

As exhausting as it may be, you may want to take him out a few times in the overnight hours for a potty break. That's what we did, in an effort to avoid accidents. We were zombies, but it's worked. We got Ace at 7 weeks. He, knock on wood, does not pee in his crate. He now sleeps through the night with no accidents and no need for overnight potty breaks. He's now 10 weeks. He's had maybe 3 accidents early on.

Again, it is exhausting, but it worked for us and now we too can sleep through the night along with Ace. If only he could hold his pee as well when he's out of the crate, we'd be "golden". :-)

Hey, just wanted to update everyone.  He's finally, at just over 12 weeks, sleeping longer periods.  I haven't woken myself up the past few nights, and the crate has been clean when my husband takes him out in the morning.  :)

I really think for a puppy this young you'll need to set your alarm and take him out during the night....he's a little young to make it through the night without having to go potty.  You don't want him thinking it's okay to go in his crate or it will make your training more difficult.
