This issue is not dealt with in our community guidelines, per se.
So I would like to get the opinion of our members. What do you think
about owners starting forum discussions in order to rehome their doodles?
Do you feel differently about various situations?
-- longtime member who now is in a dire situation and needs to find a new home for their dog
-- brand new member whose purpose of membership is to find a new home for their dog
-- a doodle who will be given away free or almost free
-- a doodle who is being sold for a significant cost
Should there be a group for posting rehomes? Should they add their listing to the doodles in need?
Should it be not allowed at all? Any other thoughts on how we should handle this?
If the dog is being sold, should the member be directed to the puppy sales groups?
On the one hand we don't want this to be a doodle dumping ground, but on the other hand we have nearly 3000 people -- a HUGE audience and if someone needs to find a home for their doodle it sure is helpful to post here!
I think I am very conflicted about this whole topic. On the one hand, we are here because of our love of this breed and on the other hand, like you said before, do we want to educate people who don't know better that there are other aveneus besides a shelter or pound to dump the dogs in. That is happening too much, too. I am very sad today with the other posts over this issue and hope our members can be objective over this. It is very hard to be objective when people don't consider our dogs as family members, but things to be gotten rid of.
This is from IDOGs Volunteer Guide: "Doodles frequently need diplomats...sometimes after speaking with you, owners decide they want to give the dog a second chance. You may have helped them see their pet has...and they needed guidance...this is not a failure...it's an opportunity to educate the owners and help them...If the owners do want to surrender the dog, do not make it hard for them. If they do not feel comfortable or feel that they are being judged, they may dump the dog at a shelter, euthanize the dog or turn him loose...rather than deal with rehoming. Diffuse the situation so that it does not turn into a rescue."
We need to be available to educate and aid, not turn away. That's my opinion.
Honestly I am going to take a break from DK for a while. I know there is nothing but good intentions on fostering, re-homing and finding refuse for these heartlessly abandoned dogs. And I humbly thank everyone involved in rescues. You are true guardian angels for these babies. But lately DK seems to be filled with such sad stories. When I first signed onto DK it was a fun and happy place to come to share (HAPPY) stories and gain some awesome information. Now when I long on I find myself crying every single time. I'm wondering if others are feeling the same way.
We certainly can't ban sad news or create a forced happy...I would LOVE suggestions as to how we should manage this without micromanaging. Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions regarding this?
Do we need a few extra groups for certain topics? What general, flexible, guidelines (not talking rules necessarily) would you (or anyone else) suggest?
I don't think there needs to be any more rules in reguards to what people post, and Adina it would only create more work for you. I read what I want to read and respond when I want to respond.......sad ,happy, or otherwise.
Lori with all due respect, if that is the real reason you are taking a break from DK then I'm sorry. Everyone has the option to NOT read what is posted.....No one is twisting your arm to read and cry.....We all have PLENTY of fun here on DK ,...and quite frankly I am quite sick of some of the repetitive REDICULOUS questions posted throughout...Frankly?....There is plenty stuff on here that insults my intelligence!......
Helping innocent dogs displaced or abused because of the STUPIDITY AND SELFISHNESS of human beings is NOT something to be flippant about.....SORRY IF THAT IT"S NOT FUN AND ENTERTAINING.....I personally cannot indulge in "fun and entertaining" without also acknowledging the fact that while people on here post about how cute it is when Fido takes a s***..... hundreds of wonderful, innocent dogs are suffering because of people's IGNORANCE!......How some people sleep at night knowing this amazes me.....
Well I have to say...that is flat out insulting! Re-read my post. I have nothing but respect for people involved in rescues. I myself have 3 rescued dogs and 3 rescued cats. I just find it a bit of an overload to have it plastered all over the main forum.
Lori...I apologize again if it was harsh or venomous ....It was more or less directed at others and your post presented a perfect opportunity to rant......lol
Jacquie..I totally understand your frustration. Just no that I would take in every single last stray animal...whatever its make or model!! It absolutely breaks my heart what mankind is capable of. And putting such stories and complete disregard for these lives in its own group is the best idea. I am a pretty tough cookie (married 3 times) but when it comes to animals, forget it.
Honey I KNOW!.....you are an angel.....That's why we love you ...and me particularly...Besides if you leave who's going to handle our Doodle Train map?!!??...lol.WE NEED YOU!
