Hello all!! i finally picked Charly up from the airport about 2 hours ago and must say i am more than happy with her!!! she's a little shy i'm sure this has alot to do with the fact that she is an older pup and i am a total stranger to her.. so under those circumstances i must say she is doing ok! the only thing is that she hasn't gone to the bathroom since i've had her. i just took her crate out of my car and took out the stuff she was laying in and it was moist so it looks like she used the bathroom in there.. idk, maybe nerves or scared and plus she was in there for a few hours. i've taken her out a few times and she just seems more interested in everything around, and not wanting to sniff around in the grass. should i just keep taking her out and trying? i really would hate for her to have an accident in my apt. i would feel so bad like it was my fault... any suggestions??
Oh Chastity! You finally have your puppy. It sound like she thinks the crate is her bed for now and she may have dribbled in it a little because of fear of the car or the airplane. But most of the time a puppy will not go to the bathroom in their bedding area. If she feels safe in the crate, then let her stay in there when she is unsupervised in the house. Make sure to take her outside frequently right to the place where you want her to go to the bathroom. When she does it in that place, give her praise and a reward. She will catch on soon. I think the main thing in house training a dog is not to let them alone in the house unsupervised until they have their bathroom spot firmly determined in their minds. My dogs have never had an accident in the house.
Good Evening everyone!! wow.. i must say it has been an exciting and overwhelming 2 days for me so far! i'm sure for Charly too! ok so the night went excellent.. while i was in my room watching tv last night she was laid out on my futon mattress that i have on the floor next to my bed.. i know i know.. kind of weird. LOL but i have family that comes to visit often LOL so its better than the floor! LOL well Charly seems to LOVE it, so i let her hang out there cause i didnt want to put her on the bed just yet. well time came to put the lights out and i gently led her to her kennel and she went right in with no argument. well she slept till about 10am!!! LOL she didnt cry or anything, i was thinking maybe she would to be let out for potty or something but she didnt! last night she finally did tinkle at about 9:45.. i mean she shows absolutely no sign of having to go. so this morning i got ready put out food and water she didnt eat but she did drink some water. as we were leaving i walked her outside and she did potty. about an hour later while we were out and about she did #2. we finally got back home at about 430 and she hasnt potttied since. she finally ate a little and did drink more water but still no potty. she's very very calm and quiet.. hasnt barked, not too playful, but is interested in toys, she just seems shy like she doesnt want to show me she has a playful side. she's so sweet with me though.. she licks me and watches me. she is so curious about all the sounds outside when i take her out. i let her walk around and try to find a spot for about 30min or so and she won't even tinkle a little.. should i be concerned? i mean im thinking if she has to go she will? IDK... i'm sorry for being such a nuissance guys.. but i truly do listen to what all of you have to say and it is sooooo helpful!!
This is what DK is all about!! To share and learn from others!
Here's Samantha's story about potty time -
Samantha gets up in the morning with me around 7a, has no desire to go out to potty until 10am'ish which is really a problem since I am supposed to be at work by 830a. (good thing I work for DH). I take her out so many times but does nothing unless she wants to. I beg, I plead but still nothing. SHe just sits at the top of the steps (her pen is at the bottom and to the left) sitting like a Queen on her throne (excuse the pun) watching her country. We can stand outside for 1/2 an hour - this has been her routine since she came home with us 8 months ago!! She is just not a morning person. You can't make them go potty but as long as she holds it it is okay by me.
At 230pm she sits in fromt of my desk and stares through me and gives me a soft
'wwwooooffff'. I take her out - all she does is sniff, sniff and sniff. No potty. But I am sure the first time I igore that quiet wwwoooffff she will pee in my office.
We get home around 430p - oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, can she pee and poop!!!
Before bed she usualIy won't go. I keep telling Samantha 'this is your last chance, I am going to bed. You don't go now, you are SOL until the morning.' She couldn't care less. She just won't go.
Don't make yourself nuts - give yourselves time. You will get to know her body schedule soon enough.
Just have fun and relax!!!
hello all!!! well it has been an interesting 5 days!! absolutely life changing and definitely for the best! Charly hasn't had an accident in the house yet(knock on wood) she lets out a little cry when she has to go outside, i even hung the pooch bells on my front door and she is even going there to ring them if i am taking to long putting on my shoes or coat or whatever! she has finally conquered going up the stairs! going down is a different stoory.. still scary for her, i think because maybe the staircase is outside so you can see below, i really don't know, but for now i am super excited with her being a big girl and going up.. its so cute, she goes up one at a time and looks thru each gap in every stair LOL the fear of the elevator door that she had has gone away too, she is still hesitant when we walk toward it but knows iits ok and hurries in! she has her favorite spot outside to go do her business, its pretty funny because she waits for my command to say(pee pee) and goes, then hurries over to me very proud because she knows i start jumping and with her and petting her when she goes :) O, i took her yesterday to get groomed, she absolutely loved the place, the lady had about 4 doodles in there when i showed up and she absolutel fell in love with charly saying she had never seen her color and size. she even took pics befre and after and asked if she could put them on her website!!! :) i was a proud mommy!! it was awesome when i went to pick her up about 2-1/2 hrs. later, she was so excited to see me, licking me and turning and jumping!! :) i'll put some pics on my page of how she looks all groomed.. i am so happy with her i couldnt even ask for anything more, she has truly been a joy in just 5 days!!! WOW!! thank everyone for the support and kin words of wisdom, i definitely took everything everyone told me and put it to good use!! this is an awesome community!! DOODLES RULE!!!! LOL
We want to get an older pup too (eventually), but since we found out we're expecting a baby, we put a dog on the backburner, but we'd want an older pup who's already housebroken and somewhat trained.
