Snakes

We live in East Texas and within the past 10 days have had two snakes. One was on the front porch and last night one on the doggie door porch. I don't know if the one last night was poisonous or not, he's not with us any longer.

Does anyone know of safe products to put around the perimeter of the yard to keep snakes away?

We have the ALD and 3 Westie's, these little guys are the ones I'm most afraid will get bitten by a snake. They are way too curious and they don't back down.

Hanna & I have been to Rattlesnake Avoidance class also...but it was a couple of years ago already, so not sure she would remember now !!  We love to trail run, so we either have to go early morning when it is still cold, or hang it up till late fall... those things freak the heck out of me !!!!

I totally hate all snakes. Going to try sulphur and maybe the snake away. Fortunately, the snake was about the size of a little finger and about 6 inches long. We told the dogs that it was bad and everyone backed off and just looked at it. After we killed the snake Jake, the Westie moved in to sniff the blood.

We were told that it is a good idea to have a refresher Avoudance class each year. Have a friend with a Rhodesian Ridgeback that has been to the class for the last 3 years. He alerted her to a Rattler last week when they were at their cabin in the Sierras! She couldn't figure out why he was slamming on the brakes! Sure enough a Rattler about 6-7 feet in front of her.

We saw a bull snake on a walk with Annabelle on Sunday. She seemed afraid of it and hid behind me crying. It was wiggling across the path and went into the grass. I told Annabelle to hold that thought, snakes are bad for doggies. She is never outside without us anyway, we are pretty protective of her. We had a friend die from a rattle snake bite while camping years ago. I have always been terrified of snakes, but that really sealed the deal. My husband and our Golden Retriever saw a rattler on a hike in Colorado years ago. Charlie alerted my husband to it. Must have been instinct because Charlie had never been to a snake class. Until today I had no clue they even existed. So glad I wasn't with them, that is the stuff of nightmares for me.

Debbie, Here is what I would do....MOVE away from Texas :) LOL I am PETRIFIED of snakes, so I think I would buy puppy pads and hide in the house with a shotgun. I wish you good luck and hope someone can help.

We live in rattlesnake country, and took Molly to a rattlesnake aversion class last spring. The class absolutely worked. I came upon a huge rattlesnake sleeping on the deck next to our pool last summer. My husband successfully killed it in the yard (sorry about that snake lovers, but it was imperative that it didn't get away and there was no way there was time to trap it to rehome.). When Molly caught a whiff of where that snake was, she backed away immediately and growled and retreated. It took several days before she would go anywhere near where that snake had been sleeping. The scent of it clearly spooked her. I was dubious about whether the aversion training would work, but we have her signed up for a refresher class this weekend.

Debbie - that would scare me to death.  Have you checked out this article on wikihow.  It has 10 good ideas that help discourage snakes.
